question about deep vein thrombosis and other leg vein disorders
ok, i recently went in for a DVT scan of my legs because my doctor wanted to rule out any deep vein issues going on after a fall i had a couple of months ago and some heart/lung issues that developed after this, and came back rather inconclusive.. however the next day had a scan of my lungs, etc. anyways.. im 25 years old and DVT runs on both sides of my family, especially at young ages.

during the DVT scan, my left leg came out perfect.
onto the right leg (which for some reason near the calf feels swollen and tight a lot and looks a bit more thicker than the other) everything was fine until he got to the side of my leg towards the bottom calf, on the side. right above/side of the ankle. during this test they test the soundwaves, like an ultrasound, to check the decompression and compression of the veins upon pressing on them. as he squeezed the ankle.. nothing was decompressing in that area... but then when i moved my foot a bit, it decompressed a bit. the tech then asked me if i ever had any swelling in that leg and i said yeah and he said it wasnt a clot, but most likely some type of arterial disease. um, that makes no sense.

so, now, i dont know what the hell to think. i was wonderig about that leg for a while anyway. feels like its about to go into a muscle spasm, but.. doesnt. tho the other leg does that sometimes too. so.. who knows.
it looks a but wider on the side and when looking at the calf when turning my leg sideways.

occasionally i'll feel a 'pop' in there. as if there were an air bubble. could THAT be a sign of soemthing? how actually precise are DVT scans anyway?

also, the calf looks and feels very heavy. as if it were rwtaining water and i HAVE had very very mild pitting of that area.

i do not have diabetes. i do not have congestive heart failure. do have hormonal issues tho, but again, this is just one leg.

You may very well have DVT. This would not be the first time I have met people who were victims of gross incompetence. My advice is to seek a second opinion; the heart/lung issues really worry me.

There are any number of arterial things that could cause problems in the legs and thorax and your doc may be perfectly good, but a a rule of thumb, if you aren't sure and can afford to do so its a good idea to seek a second opinion.

yeah my pulse rate is erratic. can go anywhere from 80 to 150 and everywhere in between in seconds and have some probs takign deep breaths.. heart, palps. been going on for months now. had echos, ekg's.. etc done.. and no one really knows why.

im still awaiting the full results back from the lung scan, that i had done just a week and a half ago. they let me leave , saying they didnt see anything, at least at that time, concerning.. so.. they were gonan further review it and give the report the rest to my cardiologist and family doc.
been calling both like crazy and they dont have the reports back yet. which pisses me off. they also did a chest x-ray.
they ddint wanna do a spiral CT scan yet. assholes.

The scans are very accurate. It's the doctors ability to translate that data that varies.

Oh, for a list of the myriad things that could be causing your problem:

Personally, I think it sounds like sarcoidosis. It explains the lung and heart problems too, and leg issues aren't unheard of.

Do you drink diet sodas or anything with NutraSweet or Splenda? If you use either product, try to abstain for several weeks and see if you notice any improvement. I quit both products, and within weeks my calves, feet, and ankles returned to a normal shape and thickness. Might be worth a try.

Thankyou for that!

yes, i have an unspecified auto-immune disorder that they claim is like lupus, but isnt. more borerline lupus.. whatever the heck they wanna consider that. been that way since i had my first test at age 12.

tho this leg thing is in my calf, not thigh... but might possibly be something like that. never really 'bothered' me until recently really. just knowing its there or... could be soemthing, makes me think about it and therefore take notice to things that might just be brought on by thought. i worry too damn much, but yeah. even my mom said to me the other niht after i shaved my legs.. "Your right leg looks a bit swollen... does it hurt?"

feels like theres a bucket of water in there. i said that to the doc and tech tho. so.. i dunno. with the followup im gonna request the next adavanced vein scan.

the heart thing.. well, nothings actually progressed from that. the ekg's are abnormal tho. shows a right atrial strain and possible left ventricular hypertrophy but the echos ruled that out. right atrial strain could mean soemthing with the lung, obviously. took me forever to convince them to do this.

Nah, nope. never used splenda.. and nutrasweet only a few times yeaaaars ago when i was at my grandmoms. lol. i usually hate all that stuff. i rarely have soda these days.
i tend to be more underhydrated too. i pee a lot. for some reason tho. i can go a whole day with hardly drinking anything and if i lay on my left side.. scrunched up, like when im about to go to sleep or laying down, it triggers me having to go right away. not sure where the water comes from. i posted about that a while back on here actually, lol. i dont think people believed me, lol.
this gets worse and worse, worse during my period tho. which makes me think i have some cysts acting up. never any pain tho. i never have any internal pain anywhere except if my cyst is annoying me and usually thats a dull sharp, quick OUCH.. but thats been that way for years. was on the pill for that (and the hormones) from 1996 till 2004. took myself off. havent been on it since.

i thought maybe i have a fibroid or something squashign stuff about in there. but still.. wheres the water come from?!
i'll be peeing out LOADS of water that i surely didnt drink. at all. mostly at night this happens though.

again, congestive lung or heart things .. ruled out. no lymphademas.. but my glands are always having issues. swollen.. sore.
been that way .. god.. since we firts moved into this house in 1993. right when i was really going thru hormonal changes. go figure.

Re: question about deep vein thrombosis and other leg vein disorders
DVT can strike anyone at any time. It's particularly common when one has an accident or fall and is renderred immobile for an extended period of time. It is also commonly seen after surgery where a patient is laying in one position for an extended period of time and is unable to move or repositon their legs during this time on the operating table. Happens more than is admitted on airlines, too. When someone is trapped in a narrow seat and cannot get out to move about for four or five hours. DON"T TAKE A WINDOW SEAT ON A FULL LONG HAUL FLIGHT.

DVT is simply the formation of blood clots in the lower legs. They can form from the thigh down to the foot and range in size from microns across to several millimeters. The clots impede bloodflow and not much else (oh, they can cause swelling and soreness and a feeling of a hot spot if you touch the area near where they're located) but they truly become dangerous and can be life-threatening if they break free and move to the lungs, heart, or brain.

I had back surgery and was in bed for over a week. I used all the 'right' precautions. Air booties in the OR and afterward, compression stockings, and got up to urinate and stand every few hours. And still got DVT myself. I didn't know it until a nurse noticed a "hot spot" and rushed me into a doppler ultrasound and a full MRI and CT scan. They discovered that twelve or thirteen little clots had alreaay broken off and had hit my lungs! Any one of them could have killed me. All I noticed was a few seconds of feeling dizzy once in a while. Yes, very dizzy and it passed quickly so I assumed it was just getting accustomed to being up and around again. My docs went into panic mode - the hospitalized me, pumped me full of fast acting blood thinners, and wrapped both legs with full compression and put the air-booties back on both legs and kept me that way for three days.

A subsequent scan showed the thinners had done their job and we found no new clots during later scans. I'm told I'm lucky to be here still. Maybe I am. The weeks on blood thinners at home helped. Today, I take an aspirin every day and hope for the best. That's about all you can do - that and avoid generals anesthesia for long surgeries unless you absolutely have to undergo same to save your life. That, and keep active, take your aspirin, and make sure the slightest sign of this happening again is thoroughly worked upto eliminate a recurrance or to treat it early and aggressively if it should happen.

The Doppler Color Ultra Sound scans are VERY accurate. The tech should have kept his mouth shut, however. He may see or do a lot of these scans - but he is not trained to interpret the results. Make sure your doc is an expert in treating these. At your age - you should not be having this - but if you have a family history of it, then it's probably just going to me using preventative care to make sure it does not happen again. That, and above all - stay active. Don't allow yourself to be sedintary for more than a few hours if that!
Life really is a banquet - and truly - most poor sucker are starving! Enjoy the ride baby.

yeah, i doubt they'd go along with that, though. they want a perfectly 'good reason' to order such a test. i've been nagging about a cat scan since the beginning about the other stuff. this is the 3rd doctor ive switched to due to the previous ones' ignorances or screwing up stuff. the one doctor thought just because i was 25 that it was "impossible" for me to have an enlarged heart. wtf?!?!??!?!

i got an appointment for thursday at 9:30am. i'll see if they'll at least let me get a venography done. i'll still have to wait for everything to be pre-certed. they gotta have my primary doctor do that. this would be the cardioloigst. and my primary doc's office is closed on thursdays. and usually takes them days to pre-cert stuff. apparemt;y the DVT scan only measures the "probablity" something is there. nothing definitive.

That will prevent future clots, but dislodge existing ones. I would advise the OP to ask a physically present doctor before taking any medication.
