Why do people do it? Is cannibalism a crime? When is it acceptable to eat human flesh? Here are all your questions answered.

Why do people eat human flesh?

According to Prof. Gérard Labuschagne, clinical psychologist and former Head of the SAPS’ specialised Investigative Psychology Section (IPS), people who eat human flesh in his experience usually have mental health problems. Although it’s difficult to say in this instance without all the facts being available, Labuschagne says a person accused of eating human flesh usually experienced some sort of psychotic episode, which could include hallucinations where the perpetrator heard voices or saw images. “In my experience, it usually has nothing to do with muti rituals, as is often believed,” he says.

Is it a crime to eat human flesh?

There is no criminal charge for eating human flesh, but the National Health Act clearly stipulates that it is illegal to be in possession of any human tissue unless authorised by the relevant person or institution, says Labuschagne. In addition, the desecration or mutilation of a corpse is a criminal act and the means of acquiring any body parts can, of course, also be criminal. In other words, if someone killed a person to eat his flesh, he may be charged with murder and the desecration of a corpse. If he stole the body parts he may be charged with theft.

A man who attacked another with a knife, before turning on police, was shot dead by an officer in Braamfontein in the early hours of Monday morning.

"Police were driving along the corner of Simmonds and Wolmarans roads when they saw two people fighting. One was stabbing the other with a knife," explained police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela.

"Police stopped and tried to intervene in their fight. The one who had the knife attacked the police and the police shot at him."

Makhubela said that the attacker died instantly, while the stabbing victim was taken to hospital.

A case of attempted murder and an inquest have been opened.

The Hawks have obtained warrants for the arrest of at least one of the Gupta brothers.

The unit is now waiting for prosecutors at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to sign off the warrants so that the arrests can be effected.

A senior Hawks official told City Press on Monday evening that a magistrate had issued warrants of arrest for at least one of the Gupta brothers as well as an undisclosed number of the family’s associates.
