Massive Meteorite Found Near Stockton
(CBS) STOCKTON An amazing discovery was made by scientists who think they found a meteorite the size of a small town!

They were looking for oil but instead found space dust and a possible mammoth meteorite. The possible meteorite is buried deep in the ground about ten miles west of Stockton in an area called Victoria Island.

Scientist believe the meteorite is buried. nearly a mile underground on some farmland.

3-D images show that the circular crater created by the rock is estimated to have been about 3 miles wide. The meteorite is also believed to have fallen to earth over 50 million years ago.

The impact would have been as powerful as 100-thousand atomic bomb blasts and would have been seen and heard for hundreds of miles.

Scientists will be back at the site to try to collect more samples and someday possibly get a piece of the meteorite itself.

If you look at Google Earth, especially in the sparsley populated areas around Africa and Australia, I have noticed MANY impact craters with rocks still visible. I would be surprised if someone is not already using this to find them.

I think it was before 50 million years, maybe 26,000, or 10,500 years ago.

 Quoting: Sigma

I do that where I live in Minnesota. Carefully check out the satellite maps, which are readily available online, to see if there are any evident impact structures near you. If it looks like it, go check it out. Remember that the whole idea of rocks from space is only about 200 years old. There hasn't been all that much investigating done. And sat maps online is a huge resource. Earth has been pummeled just as much as the Moon and Mars, but the craters have been covered up by weather, erosion, and natural processes. The craters are out there, under your feet, they just need to be found.

On this Victoria Lake impact structure from the link, which is 10 miles west of Stockton, California, here is the Google satellite map-

While the 3 mile wide crater is not immediately evident. If you look closely at the areas without housing or development, there does appear to be some secondary impact structures in the area.

But there have been some of these million year old meteorites discovered before. Usually Iron meteorites, usually in rusty deteriorated condition. Theres a few of them in Australia and South America. But a million year old meteorite isn't nearly as cool as one that fell recently. Like 1969 in Allende or Sikohte-Alin in the 1940's. Good find though, if you go dig one up, it's gonna be worth more than the average rock!
