It was a Category 1 for most of its trip across the Gulf. It went from 1 to 4 in a relatively short space of time and most of that happened when it was already getting close. It really was downplayed by many. |

My guess is people downplayed the severity That and no one took it serious until yesterday evening I myself decided to hunker down Speaking as a person who had relatives ride out Camille back in '69, I'm not sure why anyone along the Gulf Coast would downplay a hurricane. The Gulf Coast waters in late August reach temperatures up to 90 degrees - once a hurricane enters the gulf its a ticking time bomb, start planning to board up/get gas/supplies/water/etc. (alternatively, gtfo of the area before there's gridlocked traffic). |
