Went thru Charley here, 13 years ago. I can give some tips.

There will be TONS of "rumors." Funny - nobody really knows where they start!

Your freezer WILL BE GOOD, and all food saved for AT LEAST 3 days - IF YOU KEEP IT COMPLETELY CLOSED. I had to leave town for 2 days, when I got back, still all my food - fridge AND stand-up freezer was all still cold. I never lost one single item from my freezer. When we got back, we hooked up our generator and plugged in the freezer and everything was saved.

If no generator, try to get ice to keep as much food cool as you can. National Guard will start to come around handing out ice soon....get the whole family to go get a bag each to try to save as much of your food as you can.

Then, if you start to cook the food, over a barbeque or microwave (again, if a generator is handy), you can then chill it in cooler with ice and it'll keep for a few days.

How long you are out of electric depends on where you are "on the grid." Literally, some folks who live in our town had electricity restored the NEXT DAY as they were on the same grid as hospital and fire stations, etc. We were out 11 days.

Be safe Blackraven. I hate to see the high school in Rockport go down. I think it would be incumbent on the county and school district in the future to build high schools...really all schools, to withstand certain wind levels and to elevate them to prevent flooding.

It could be a win/win for the residents and students.

Hopefully, they'll start taking some of this to heart.

And have an evac plan in place.

Geez.

A 1000 watt inverter and starting your automobile to keep the battery charged periodically will keep a fridge. Also get an extension cord and some LED or CFL lights. LED lights can run a long time on a car battery without starting the car even. Makes a poor mans generator.

150 mph winds against a building with 1994 square feet surface area roof will mimic a 757's wings lifting off with a max weight of 240,000 lbs.

That is 240 thousands lbs of force on the roof. If the winds hit the roof like a wing.

Flat roofs will see a little less but still have thousands of lbs of force on them during a 150mph gust.

A building in rockport with people inside has collapsed .
 Quoting: blackraven

During Hurricane Betsy back in the 60's people all flocked to the schools for shelter , just to be displaced in the middle of the storm as the roofs flew off and the buildings collapsed around them.

My family went to 3 different shelters, then simply made our way back to our home to ride it out. Man that was a crazy night. The night the lights went out in the New Orleans area.

You should be able to pick one up for less then $100. I bought some 900 Watt inverters for $40 from an automotive supply store. Also I keep some deep cycles charged with trickle chargers for emergencies. We lose power about twice a year for extended amounts of time. I also take them camping with me to have power remotely.

Cut your meat in very thin slices, season spices and set up branches with forked ends over a smoky fire. Hang the meat well above the flames and very slowly smoke cook it into jerky. Not too much heat. You can do chicken that way also. On the side of the fire on a flattish rock dry any fruit you may have (like banana chips).

Prayers for all of you on the coast and take the flood warnings serious!!! Stay safe!!

A 1000 watt inverter and starting your automobile to keep the battery charged periodically will keep a fridge. Also get an extension cord and some LED or CFL lights. LED lights can run a long time on a car battery without starting the car even. Makes a poor mans generator.

It's a little late to go looking for something like that now, isn't it?

Good info, tho, and I'll prolly go invest in one now, just to have for the future.
