You know, I understand that it may seem ridiculous. But, even after Irma dissipates there is chance for mass casualties. That water won't be going anywhere for a while, which will breed viruses. Some in Texas are already seeing the effects of this. Plus, you will have thousands without power, thousands without homes or whose homes are uninhabitable, thousands in close confinement in shelters...all of that leads to the potential for the spreading of contagions. Floodwater is often more than rain or ocean water pushed in by the hurricane's storm surge. It's often contaminated by chemicals or sewage. People are walking through this, swimming in it to help people, etc. It's in their homes, their cars, schools...Things like zika and other mosquito-borne viruses spread more easily in water. The water also creates mold problems, which leads to other health issues. In a warm environment like Florida, these problems will only spread more quickly. In poorer areas and areas that are impassable and first responders cannot get through to easily, it will be much worse. This is far worse than just some hurricane barreling through the Caribbean islands and the Florida peninsula. The real hell will likely only be beginning once the hurricane leaves. |

A hurricane is wind and rain, that's what it is. It's weather, not a nuclear bomb. But I love hurricane coverage. |

The outer bands that hit last night and this morning are not going to have the same force as the rest of the storm. This is only just the beginning. Give it time. |
