It's their damn paranoia. They don't feel safe unless they have buffer zones they control. Finland, Balti countries, Poland and Ukraine are all in imminent danger. To make matters worse, Russia knows NATO can't protect these countries. So, they might have a go and hope that NATO does nothing. In that case, NATO would cease to exist and Russia would get the buffer zone.
