This is the second time in four years the penguin population undergoes a devastating event, due to starvation, such as this. The discovery has prompted urgent calls for the establishment of a marine protected area in East Antarctica. French scientists discovered just two surviving chicks at the start of the year, along with thousands of starved chicks and unhatched eggs across the island in the region called Adélie Land (“Terre Adélie”). In 2013, the colony faced similar ordeals, but no chicks survived. French scientists, Yan Ropert-Coudert from France’s National Centre for Scientific Research, said it had been caused by a record amount of summer sea ice and an “unprecedented rainy episode”. The bizarre extent of sea ice meant the penguins had to travel an extra 100 km (62 mi) to find food. And the rainy weather left the chicks wet and unable to stay warm due to their weak waterproofing. Large amount of sea ice was also the main cause of this year’s event. Generally, Antarctica has had a record low amount of summer sea ice, but the area around the colony has been an exception."
