The situation in the zone of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict began to deteriorate sharply in late July and early August. Active hostilities began on the night of August 8, when Georgia subjected the capital of South Ossetia to massive shelling [43], and then made an attempt to establish control over South Ossetia. On the afternoon of August 8, the Russian president announced the beginning of an "operation to enforce peace" in the conflict zone. Significant Russian forces were introduced into the region. For several days, the Russian troops, together with the South Ossetian armed formations, forced out Georgian troops from South Ossetia, and in cooperation with the Abkhaz forces - from the Kodori Gorge in Abkhazia, temporarily occupying a number of adjacent Georgian regions.

The fighting continued until August 12 inclusive. From August 14 to August 16, the Presidents of Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Georgia and Russia signed a plan for a peaceful settlement of the conflict. The five-day war had significant geopolitical, economic and other consequences. So, on August 26 Russia officially recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states. On September 2, Georgia severed diplomatic relations with Russia. The process of Georgia's entry into NATO stalled.
