User ID: 75474476 United States 11/18/2017 07:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is a great thread! My AP system has given me fits due to hard water. Soon, I will be getting a reverse osmosis filter and use it in the greenhouse and to replenish the AP water which will be a gradual, but necessary endeavor. Better for both the fish and the food. The problem I have with AP is that things generally grow much better in media beds, but the media is so dang expensive. I'll be doing more than half lava rocks topped with expanded clay in the future. LED grow lights are really getting inexpensive now. And you can put them on a closet rail track for very little expense. This is what we are doing for our greenhouse now. The plastic isn't lasting long enough so we are putting metal on the greenhouse and going to have a little daylight with translucent panels and the led lights. All this for veggies. But when it's cold and icy outside and you go into the balmy greenhouse, it's a beautiful thing. And the food production is also beautiful! Things are bad enough, there is no need to make anything up. ~Fluffy "Never interrupt an enemy in the process of destroying himself." Quercitin and zinc...Get it. Take it. Man that guy looks like he is about to kill someone with every new project he starts, cutting down hundreds of trees by himself and shit. There is always a secret mountain lion hunting the poor stupid homesteaders...who magically have never shot a gun ever and all the water is deadly poisoned, and it is just a great show |

User ID: 75845060 United States 11/18/2017 09:18 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Excellent thread... We are all thinking of climate change and how we can grow food in a different climate... The Scenarios that might happen are: 1) Polar axis shift. This would change climate if true North was not at the pole. Growing seasons would change and be prepared by having a variety of seeds that grow in different climates.... 2) Nuclear Winter. How about no Sun for years until all the dust settles out from the upper atmosphere. The climate would literally go wild. IMO, the only way to grow food would be in a cave. Possibly mushrooms... 3) Yellowstone Super Eruption. Many weeks of darkness and rain. The whole wheat belt would be devastated. A greenhouse might work, but the wind and hail from storms would tear it apart. I would think that plants like potatoes would be one of the hardiest to survive... |

User ID: 75474476 United States 11/18/2017 09:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A poly green house will work for a season longer if agricultural poly is used some has reinforced with nylon threads you can walk on it. also for cold house use two layers inside and outside creates a insulation pocket between the layers. I would have made the sides to roll up to allow much more air on a warm day, add a fan to keep air moving or mold, powdery mildew will set in humidity must be kept below 60%. in spring add humidifier if low humidity of 45% or less you will get spider mites and other pests. Quoting: sandman1 Yes, I used the agricultural poly. We just have bad luck with it I guess. We get about 10 months out of it, and that just isn't efficient enough. At least not for us. But at this point, with the way things are, we definitely do not want to give up the greenhouse, so we're going outside the box to make it workable. Something that I read about, but don't have personal experience with, is using about 1" of sand on top of soil to get rid of fungus gnats which are a plague for me in the early spring. We have raised beds of composted manure in our greenhouse and an AP system. The sand won't cut it in the AP, but in the beds, it shouldn't be an issue. Some people have no issues when entering the controlled environment growing realm. That isn't me. I've had every problem one can think of. A lot of them stem from PH issues, and getting that in order is a major help. So I want to encourage people to be diligent about checking their ph. Another thing, keep in mind growing herbs that will curtail heavy metals, like lemon grass and cilantro, for instance. Things are bad enough, there is no need to make anything up. ~Fluffy "Never interrupt an enemy in the process of destroying himself." Quercitin and zinc...Get it. Take it. User ID: 24294816 United States 11/18/2017 09:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Aquaponic I am on my third round of tilapia, this batch i started memorial day 100 fingerlings actually they were fry over a year ago, they are two + pounds now have eaten a few, my dogs have eaten many more, Don't know what happened to a lot of them at last count 35, only one female I put it alone with 1 male he killed her. So i need to buy a breading colony. Fifth build i think, System is one ibc tote 300 gallons and a old in ground spa 600 gallons for a sump and a 30 gallon trash can with 100 liters of bio balls, one 1/6th hp sub pump on a timer for circulation from sump to fish tank then gravity back to sump. Beds and media, hydro trays are best, I use 3 each 2x4 trays with hydroton one one pump and a cycle timer on 10 minutes every two hours one tray had mints 4 different plants, tray 2 had green onion chives, garlic chives, tray 3 had leeks and onions, had pump failure killed them pumps last apx. 1 year woops. The mint worked very good as a bio filter the root mass was a solid 2x4 ft 6-8 inch deep like a giant filter pad, gotta replant this soon. I also have a 3x6 foot hydro tray shallow like 5-6 inches with hydroton with 5 or 6 kinds of onions red, yellow, walla wallas does very good. If you buy a bunch or pot full of baby onions at the nursery put them in the tray keep bunched they live but not grow until you give them space, so when i harvest a few just pull a few out of the bunch and stick them in empty space done. sandman |
