The less-than-a-pound soft armor plates can turn backpacks into potentially lifesaving bullet-blockers, but they're not required, Gulla said. The plates are reportedly able to stop bullets from a handgun like a .44 Magnum or a .357 SIG, but not rifle bullets that would require heavier armor.

The panels are produced by Applied Fiber Concepts – an area body armor company founded by Alex Cejas, a parent at the school. Last year, Cejas attended one of Gulla's active-shooter drills, which led to his company offering to make custom plates for students.

Well, it IS Miami.

I had friends who taught down there, and in the '80's, there were certain areas of the county where they got HAZARD PAY if they wanted to work there. All parking lots and school doors were LOCKED once the last bell rang...

Can't imagine how much worse it is 30 years later!

At that rate, why not make the students take a firearm proficiency course, have the schools buy a fleet of Glocks, hand them out at the beginning of the day and then make them turn them in before they leave school at the end of the day.

Maybe barcode scan them in before and at the end of each day.

In a high school full of a couple thousand well armed students, no one would try anything ever unless they're an idiot and have a death wish.

The idea is to use it to shield yourself while fleeing.

My kids schools do not use lockers. Everything is in the backpack. Not so bad really, as they do not even have text books any longer, but the teachers give them print outs of instructional sections.

The reason for for no more locker use? Concerns about drugs and/or weapon concealed in lockers.

Survival extends to your kids too guys. I homeschool but if I didn't, I'd be training my kid how to deal with an active shooter.

Someone needs to ask that asshole why it is he feels kids need bullet blockers in MIAMI.. the one city in Florida where they like to try and make up their own "gun laws" illegally and enforce them "illegally".. they have the strictest gun laws in the state (illegally) but yet he thinks kids need bullet proof shields to hide behind, WHY IS THAT??

Kids walk into school and put their backpacks in their locker/cubbies for the day.

They put them on and walk out of school.

This insert offers ZERO protection during the school day.

Not very effective - but clever marketing ploy.

I kept my pistol in my locker in High school.

No one had an issue with it.. ever..

I was even told by chaperones to bring it when we went on club hikes in the mountains.

Lotta guns in Florida and ANYONE and EVERYONE is carrying them around there legally.
