What is with the lying imbeciles and the "salmonella peanut butter?"
Anybody with half a brain knows that peanut butter does not have enough moisture content to support bacterial growth of anything. That is why you can spoon some out of a jar when you've had the spoon in your mouth, put the lid back on, and eat some more a week later. Bacteria cannot grow in it. Salmonella MUST grow to a critical level before it is capable of sickening a person. It cannot grow in peanut butter, let alone piping hot liquid peanut butter just squirted into a jar and sealed with foil and capped. How hot is liquid peanut butter? Heat some in a pan until it liquifies and measure the temp with a candy thermometer-likely well above 180 degrees F. Salmonella is killed at 165 degrees F. So now they say a "leaky roof" supplied moisture for the salmonella-sure. I guess it somehow penetrated the foil seals and lids to gain access to the stored peanut butter. Pretty dang stupid.

"When making peanut butter, the nuts are again heated - above the salmonella-killing temperature of 165 degrees - as they are ground into a paste and mixed with other ingredients before being squirted into jars and quickly sealed.
Experts had speculated that salmonella would be most likely to contaminate the peanut butter as it cools and is placed in jars. At most plants, those steps take just minutes."

You think scalding hot peanut butter cools down in "a few minutes?"

Ahhhhhh...but we dutifully turned in our "tainted" peanut butter like the good little lambies that we are, no? We didn't holler. We didn't refuse. We didn't ask for a full accounting of the science. We just went along....baaaaa...baaaaaaaaaa...and they did it to us so easy it wasn't funny.

It was another test. They were testing us to see how we would comply when they set loose whatever it is they intend to use on us to get us quarantined. They wanted to see if we'd been conditioned enough to comply without question.

They won't even have to harm us. All they'll have to tell us is, "Oh my gawd, there was a leaky roof at the XYZ center, and 3 people have died from this botchu-something-or-other and it's highly contagious and there's a risk of this deadly bio-chem killing thousands."

Baaaaaa...baaaaaaaaaa...baaaaaaaaaa

We are such freakin' morons.

No that was leaky roof AND sprinkler head.

So lemmee see, they got water pouring into the mix for months but nobody notices? Then it takes them two more months after the investigation begins to find a hole in the roof?

Maybe it was a leaky garden hose. ("But we don't drink from the hose, do we?") Perhaps a touch of morning dew or a leaky fish tank? They had me going for a bit untill they said that the misguided water came from two different sourses at once.

On the other hand maybe the peanuts got wet and moldy before processing. But of course it wasn't their fault that they made PB out of wet moldy peanuts. Shit happens you know.

I personally know 2 people who got sick from peanut butter, in 2 diff. states. OP are you saying the contamination was on purpose?

You are so right... I was so blown away at how this unfolded and folded back up again... silenced! But hey, I'm still sitting on a half Jar of the proven culprit, just in case, and this jar has like a clump of dirt or something in the lower half, got to get it to the university lab for testing....

MATHETES:

We had the suspect peanut butter...a case of it. We took back the lids on 2 jars, just to be sure. Yep, same lot. I kept the rest of the case and we are still eating it. My son in MS had the same lot, as did my daughter-in-law at Killeen. Three cities. Same lot.

On purpose? Hmmmmmm...hadn't thought about that until now. You might be onto something.

Whatever this was about, we are still experiencing limited peanut butter supplies at our grocers.

Re: What is with the lying imbeciles and the "salmonella peanut butter?"
Let me clarify something...I just figured a few people got sick and the peanut butter was a convenient culprit. Sorta like the attacks of Sept 11 were a convenient reason to invade Iraq. Related, but not related. I don't know anyone who got sick. And I'm not giving up my "tainted" batch. I've got to have something more than tuna and dried milk under my bed, dammit.

Hubby came home at lunch today. I asked, "What do you want today? I'm making spaghetti." I had several jars of homemade sauce in the freezer. He said, "Oh, don't bother! I've been thinking about peanut butter and honey all morning." I told him we needed a few more cases of honey because the bees were on strike.

Re: What is with the lying imbeciles and the "salmonella peanut butter?"
In my case I lost two days work, suffered weakness and loss of strength, and on one evening, my stomach was swishing like a washing machine, I had no idea what the problem was at the time, but I do remember taking a bite of my peter pan sandwich, and spitting it back out because it did not tast like any peanut butter I had ever known... I knew something was not right with thaat jar even before the news broke!

Skippy Natrural is out now, and it's pretty good stuff..

Here is some DOOM for you on a slow day/week!

Is there a possibility that the recent and very expensive salmonella outbreaks are a non-spectacular terror event?

Why not? This would require no training, no expensive materials, and the possibilities of getting caught are almost nil. All you would need is a person with the right mindset to cause injury or death by finding a way to introduce fecal matter into the food chain, which is just what happened to ConAgra in Omaha, Nebraska recently.

Injury and death are one obtainable outcome for this type of attack, but more importantly, the cost in dollars to mitigate such an attack can seriously damage a corporation if not drive it into bankruptcy.

ConAgra makes pot pies and peanut butter.

Between pot pies at +60 million and the peanut butter at +140 million, the total cost is above 200 million for this one company! How can they survive as a company? You can bet one of the ways is to raise prices, which is another outcome of this type of non-spectacular terror attack.

Cost in dollars, injury, death, and live to fight another day!

I never pay any attention to the marketing of products. I don't believe in Salmonella either. I cook it away.
