Anyone ever had people come by their house for "seismic test readings"?? I'm in central OK. | |

Most likely for oil. We have had the technology to drill underground to a target miles away for quite some time. I have personally drilled under a few towns in ND. Drilling occurs deep enough to (usually) not cause any issues. The fracking related issues are all related to the disposal of the waste water from the fracking operations. The disposal of the water in rock formations can "lubricate" fractures causing shallow earthquakes. These types of earthquakes are way different than major New Madrid fault type quakes. While the geo-student above isn't wrong about explosions being used for seismic mapping, but more commonly and in this case they were using a "thumper". Think of it like sonar in a submarine movie. Nothing to be concerned about, unless you own a lot of property in the area and the mineral rights below. |
