Several of my cousins have done it and have nothing but great things to say about their experiences. Some have even taken off across the world with young children. South Africa, Ukraine, Thailand and Mongolia.

a buddy of mine and his wife are teaching english in Saudi and just came home and paid cash for a nice house on the lake. you can make a good living traveling and teaching

but i think most do it just for the experience and to help others

Re: Don't become an English teacher overseas
Actually, it's all what you make of it. A very good friend of mine/former roommate taught for years in Japan. Made sure to get assigned somewhere more rural (vs. somewhere like Tokyo) just to be able to save up a lot of money. Worked with junior high/high school students and really enjoyed it overall. That friend only stopped because they had a new position lined up, and it ended up being one of the areas hit by the 2011 tsunami, so the job fell through. So then that friend ended up at a job in South Korea and is still there.

South Korea/Japan suck

99% of them them will never and I mean NEVER learn to speak any language other than their own

So it's totally pointless to teach them

Then factor in the world's worst pollution (Both South Korea and Japan have higher population density than China!!) and the fact that the food down there absolutely auks (They all eat 50 cent noodles there every day, for every meal, seriously)

All the woman are ugly and have short legs.

Japan/Korea suck so much

Pay is peanuts, a fraction of what a fast food worker makes.

South Korean Korean people are at least not rude. The Japanese ? Trash of the worst sort...

Every ENGLISH teacher there is depressed, overweight, many are alcoholics alcoholic and a few are disappointed pedophiles

By the the idiot that said it's not in their culture to be disrespectful has never been to Japan/Thailand

in Japan and Thailand kids are out of control, especially Japan..they can do anything at all and face 0 consequences

Korea is the best of the lot but it is also rapidly declining

Only Asian countries with respectful populations are Singapore and Taiwan but those are going bad also

Sorry about Typos, wrote that post in a hurry

OP is 1s correct, Asia is a shithole. Think about this, We let in millions of Japanese and Koreans into our lands but how many Europeans or Americans live in Japan and Korea? Virtually none

Those people do not respect us so show them no respect in return

The only polite people I encountered in Japan were some of the service people, but that was only because they were paid to be polite. The average Japanese person hates foreigners.

Re: Don't become an English teacher overseas
Thanks for posting OP

Many countries that advertise for retirement havens for those still needing to work tell couples adapting to their future to recommend middle-aged couple have one of the two teach TEFL for a base in the country while they get used to it and learn the language.

Sounds horrible

They say the pay is good and affords a VERY nice apartment.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19876247

Yea. Maybe "good" if you're a poverty-stricken local.

OP makes good points.

Adult enrollment continues to drop leaving mostly kids' classes. Since English is pretty much mandatory in those places only the older adults needed training. As new hires come in they already have English skills.

And, OP is right again. It's not called "edutainment" for nothing. The kids run the show and Asian management is a far cry from the west's. You are better off going for the highest pay online (USD18-22) and setting your alarm clock to China time.

The "good old days" of TEFLing are G O N E!

I did it for a few years after college because I was entitled and didn't want to settle for a desk job. Let me tell you, there is nothing adventurous or lucrative about doing the TEFL thing.

I did my time in Thailand and Japan, and if I could do it over again I would have gotten a steady job and simply gone on vacations to those countries while working a real job.

Spending your days with screaming kids who can't speak your language makes you want to pull your hair out. You also aren't a real teacher as there is no real curriculum or accountability, so you just kind of make it up as you go along.

Then you have to deal with idiotic bosses who care more about selling a White face to the kids' parents more than anything else. You get paid just enough to live at your host country and not save much of anything. Wages are also trending downwards due to the hordes of delusional adventure-seekers flooding these countries.

I'm now back in the States, and I'm working at a warehouse for peanuts because TEFL experience doesn't exactly lend to the perception of professional career development. Most employers just see it as a working vacation or slacking off.

Then there's the issue with not paying in to Social Security and Medicare abroad. I know some guys in their 60s who taught for decades, are being forced out of TEFL due to age and won't be eligible for Social Security or Medicare when they get back home since they haven't paid into it. They'll literally work at Walmart or McDonalds until they drop dead.

Just forget about TEFL and get a real career.

I've done the same and it's simply not in their nature to be disrespectful.

Sorry OP. But I can hardly believe from my many experiences overseas.

Where exactly did you find such a situation/students?
 Quoting: *Sloane*

I agree. OP probably got scammed. The USD is worth roughly 3X as much in China and close to that in Thailand. You can live very well and hire a cleaning service every week and have plenty left over. It's supermarket food costs and night life that drains the money. Haha.

Research properly next time, OP

Most teachers in Korea are saving like $14,000 a year after taxes and living costs. Mostly because of free housing and cheap food.

Almost no one is doing that these days in America.

That is correct. We treat them with respect, as equals, when they move to the U.S. but the favor is not returned when we move over there.

It can be very hard to find an apartment in Japan as many landlords openly refuse to rent to foreigners. That is well known. Also, get used to people blatantly staring at you in public and avoiding you on public transportation. I can't tell you how many times I had taken a seat on a train, and the person in the seat next to me gave me a dirty look and moved to a different seat. I took a ferry once and stood a good five feet away from this Japanese guy on the deck, and he did the same thing- gave me a dirty look and moved somewhere else.
