A very good friend of mine/former roommate taught for years in Japan. Made sure to get assigned somewhere more rural (vs. somewhere like Tokyo) just to be able to save up a lot of money. Worked with junior high/high school students and really enjoyed it overall. That friend only stopped because they had a new position lined up, and it ended up being one of the areas hit by the 2011 tsunami, so the job fell through. So then that friend ended up at a job in South Korea and is still there. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 75820699 United States 11/20/2017 08:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks for posting OP Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19876247 Many countries that advertise for retirement havens for those still needing to work tell couples adapting to their future to recommend middle-aged couple have one of the two teach TEFL for a base in the country while they get used to it and learn the language. Sounds horrible They say the pay is good and affords a VERY nice apartment. Yea. Maybe "good" if you're a poverty-stricken local. OP makes good points. Adult enrollment continues to drop leaving mostly kids' classes. Since English is pretty much mandatory in those places only the older adults needed training. As new hires come in they already have English skills. And, OP is right again. It's not called "edutainment" for nothing. The kids run the show and Asian management is a far cry from the west's. You are better off going for the highest pay online (USD18-22) and setting your alarm clock to China time. The "good old days" of TEFLing are G O N E! |

Spending your days with screaming kids who can't speak your language makes you want to pull your hair out. You also aren't a real teacher as there is no real curriculum or accountability, so you just kind of make it up as you go along. Then you have to deal with idiotic bosses who care more about selling a White face to the kids' parents more than anything else. You get paid just enough to live at your host country and not save much of anything. Wages are also trending downwards due to the hordes of delusional adventure-seekers flooding these countries. I'm now back in the States, and I'm working at a warehouse for peanuts because TEFL experience doesn't exactly lend to the perception of professional career development. Most employers just see it as a working vacation or slacking off. Then there's the issue with not paying in to Social Security and Medicare abroad. I know some guys in their 60s who taught for decades, are being forced out of TEFL due to age and won't be eligible for Social Security or Medicare when they get back home since they haven't paid into it. They'll literally work at Walmart or McDonalds until they drop dead. Just forget about TEFL and get a real career. Yep. Taught in China. I liked China, but had enough of the kiddies screaming at me after a month. |

I agree. OP probably got scammed. The USD is worth roughly 3X as much in China and close to that in Thailand. You can live very well and hire a cleaning service every week and have plenty left over. It's supermarket food costs and night life that drains the money. Haha. Research properly next time, OP |

It can be very hard to find an apartment in Japan as many landlords openly refuse to rent to foreigners. That is well known. Also, get used to people blatantly staring at you in public and avoiding you on public transportation.
