Root Canal and Crowns or Dentures?
So, my aging teeth are rotting. They are decaying and now one just fell out after I had to have one removed because it became loose last week. I have had one root canal in my life, it was painful, but manageable and never had another minute's trouble after that.

Now, I'm to the point where I might have to have more teeth extracted, lots of pain. At first, I attributed the pain to the dentist, that maybe when he was extracting the one kind of leaned too hard on my jaw/teeth. But it's been over a week, and I think now they're all just "giving up." lol

History: I have not taken real good care of my teeth, so I don't doubt there are lots of cavities. But I am petrified of dentists, so that's why I never went. Now paying for it - in many ways.

My question is: How terrible are dentures? I mean, I think I could stand it if I got lowers, but the idea of living - eating - breathing - swallowing...with something STUCK to the roof of my mouth makes me want to gag just thinking about it. If I have to go that route, how long till you learn to adjust to that sensation?

Or would you go another route?

Root canals/crowns?

Implants. A woman at my work got them. It took a few weeks and she wasn't happy during that time but now she says it was worth it.

Frankincense can help you past the inflammation and give you some time to think about it. 500 mg is what I use.
There are things like brushing with coconut oil, (spit it out into the trash, can clog your drain), that can help also, to calm things down.
Let us know what you decide. Take care OP.

I've heard good and bad about implants.
Better be ready to pay for them, they are not cheap!

Re: Root Canal and Crowns or Dentures?
with the exception of the wisdom teeth, but then again, mine were extracted, yanked and chiseled out in the dark ages under local, the other molars single roots DO NOT CAUSE REAL DISCOMFORT post procedure,
and IF they were bangin ,abcessed whatever prior to the extraction, it is a relief to have them OUT.
it is a different "pain"post extraction and not the nonstop pulsating kind and believe me i have a LOW tolerance for dental pain, have had multiple extractions done in one seating and never had to have anything stronger than a tylenol-
one damned and yes damned wisdom tooth was the exception -the one chiseled out was extreme for a day and no alternatives beyond aspirin either-was incredible....but today's methods for wisdom teeth are different-i think they simply expose the area and drill it out. beats a hammering.

YOUR finances and thoughts determine which road you will travel.
however, do not believe the bs that you lose your ability to taste food, it doesn't taste the same blah blah bs.
for me the partials worked fine, they were made and fitted correctly , no denture creme whatever.
the upper partial even works as a full, stays there, no dental adhesives whatever.
FOR ME, i have no wish for implants as what IS OUT IS OUT and no further cash out put and concerns on the implant going bad due to gum periodontal problems whatever are not here.

find a recommended dentist that routinely DOES extract and get rid of the decaying teeth breaking down and take it from their.
it's ALL costly, even extractions but when you have the right hands it all works out.
dentures are not the end of the world, we could hear WORSE THINGS AS A DIAGNOSIS AND PROGNOSIS.
PS-people are unaware that i have my fake teeth as i had them made directly along the lines of my natural smile complete with the "disastoma"/that gap up front upper teeth and 2 lower front teeth ever so slightly outta alignment.
and not an ache or a pain and NO CONCERNS. LOL
life IS what it is.

Thanks for all the replies!

I've just about gotten to the point where there are no other options. Keeping these rotting teeth isn't going to cut it...I can tell they are rotting UNDERNEATH the crowns! There is pain all the time, in at least two of them, and I cannot be worried all the time that another tooth is just going to crack off and BREAK while I'm eating (is what happened with the one this past week).

Having implants put in is like buying a luxury automobile, so that probably out, since I truly DO NOT HAVE that kind of money....if I did, I'd be driving a luxury car, instead of a 12 year old one!

I always HATED the idea of dentures. My husband has them, and they are gross. I mean, his teeth are clean and everything, but the idea of the gross GLUE to stick them into his mouth every day, and the soaking, and as I said, STICKING THEM TO THE ROOF OF YOUR MOUTH makes me want to gag just thinking about it!

I don't know. I guess it's got to be dentures, just cause of the cost. Truth be told, I've put this off way too long, and now the teeth are just giving out. I never took good care of them, and used to laugh about it, but now the tables have turned on me.

Again, thank you, everyone for your input.

I'll have to get some. I'm in pain almost all day now. And JUST before Thanksgiving! And then Christmas! YAY!

I WANT all this pain - and NOT being able to eat at all for the past 5 days...and who knows how long till I get some more teeth....to just end.

I have a better idea for you

You get dentures, the only thing you will do different is you get 4 screws put in, well usually 4 maybe 5 or 6, this will hold your dentures in full time, no glue, no taking them out, it's almost like implants except it's dentures and they snap in just like the implants do.

This will solve your problem, and this is alot cheaper than implants

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE is your BEST tool for fighting tooth infection and gum disease! I have used it for over 10 years, before it became popular in toothpaste, etc!

If you have an infection, it won't work immediately, as the infection has set in. Definitely worth a try though, 3-5 times daily if you're in pain. Vigorous swishing!!!

I got dentures 6 years ago and I'm sorry I didn't do it sooner. You'd be surprised how quickly you adjust. They look great and can pretty much do anything that your real teeth can do. You really have to change your attitude about this though if you want it to work. I went in with a very positive mindset and once they were in it took me a weekend to adjust. Admittedly, they do feel weird in the beginning but now I don't even think about them. I'd rather have a little short-term discomfort than walk around with a mouth full of painful, rotting/loose teeth.

There's a website that helped me a lot when I was going through the process. Check out "Dentures A New Smile." I'm on a work computer that blocks everything so I don't know if it's still active but I think it is. It may help you decide.

On another note, having a mouth full of bad teeth is really a health risk.

Do it! You'll be glad you did.

Anyone considering getting a root canal and replacement of the same tooth in the same socket performed should research it. Many dentists believe root canals are dangerous and are linked to cancer.

if you have an infection, take antibiotics. An infection is an infection. Why dentists want to drill and pull is beyond me. Bone grows back. The body heals. The dental paradigm is the biggest scam. And never take out your roots. They won't hurt unless they are infected and then you take antibiotics...

Implants/Permanent Bridge. The process takes a while, but it is worth it in the end. I am going through this right now. I had the 5 remaining top teeth pulled, and extensive bone work done, 2 weeks ago. In 3 months I will get the posts for the top. 3 months after that, the permanent bridge will be put in. Then, the bottom will follow suite, but it will be less involved than the top, which was a mess.

Re: Root Canal and Crowns or Dentures?
I've had my dentures around 4 years and sometimes I still gag on them for 10 mins after I put them in. Of course, the surgeon never filed down my gums during extraction, so I have these barely noticeable ridges of bone in my gumline that made denture fitting so painful I cried. Then, the dentist who made them apparently had no idea what she was doing. She tried to fit an upper plate twice, and then sanded it down so far that she thought it would be totally unusable. I was so fed up that I took them home anyway. I have to completely glue them in and pry them out in the evening.

On the bright side, though initially they feel like horse teeth, nobody can tell they are dentures.

Re: Root Canal and Crowns or Dentures?
I suffer from bruxism (grinding teeth when sleeping). When I was 18 yo, I had my impacted wisdom teeth extracted. A couple years later, I was told my bite required surgery due to an incorrect occlusion of my molars. The surgery would involve breaking and resetting my jaw. I said forget that!

30 years later, it caught up to me. I had a lower molar that cracked, requiring a root canal and crown. About 5 years later, the molar in front of my crowned molar did the same thing. Again, I required a root canal and crown.

A couple years later, I developed an abscess under the front crowned molar. The oral surgeon it appeared one of my roots may have fractured and would require the tooth be extracted. Since he wasn't 100% this was case, I took the conservative approach, had the abscess drained and took antibiotics. Everything was fine for a few more years.

About 6 mo's ago, I noticed I had foul breath that no amount of brushing and rinsing with salt water or mouthwash would resolve. My gum underneath the previous abscessed molar was bright red and bleeding. I thought it was another abscess, so I lanced and drained it myself and took full course of antibiotics. That didn't fix the problem, so I went to the dentist here. The xray clearly showed my front two roots on the crowned molar were fractured. What's worse was the bone underneath it was eaten away by the infection. So no implant would be possible unless I undergo a long procedure involving a bone graft for implant.

My option is now to have the molar extracted and get a permanent bridge made (attaches to adjacent teeth).
