"Unregulated social media platforms pose significant societal risks..."

Unregulated social media platforms pose significant societal risks. That's what we found out after the 2016 election, when it became clear that social media had been used for political mass manipulation in the world's oldest democracy.

We should not be surprised. Despite a large scale scientific study conducted by Facebook in 2012 demonstrating that users' moods could be manipulated via messages fed to them, it continued to maintain a position of "algorithmic neutrality" on content. Given what we've witnessed, this won't do going forward.

The Facebook study of 2012 had sparked outrage and concern around the use of data for social experimentation without consent of human subjects. It was worrisome that data usage policies of virtually all digital platforms had become increasingly rapacious over the years, allowing them to do what they please with the data they collect assiduously. Facebook's social experiment wouldn't have been approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) for university research involving human subjects.

But the outrage has resulted in little thus far. There was no regulatory body and there still isn't one that addresses unethical or harmful uses of platform data even though the implications are arguably as serious as those involving national security. The very real possibility that a party with meager resources can potentially influence a democratic election represents an incalculable "externality" imposed on us through a trust vulnerability in our social media ecosystem.

Because trust is so important when it comes to our money, we have historically held banks and financial firms to much higher standards of compliance and control than other businesses. Financial institutions are required to follow well-defined processes with oversight and failsafe plans aimed at minimizing risk and maximizing public trust.

The terror attacks of 2001 ushered in stringent Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations requiring such institutions know their customers in great detail. The 2008-2009 crisis resulted in further regulation aimed at mitigating economic instability and curbing the use of funds for financing terrorism and other illicit activity.

Re: Social Media Platforms Need To Be Regulated! NYU Prof Sees "Dangerous Issues For Society"
I am a teacher. I have to sign a contract stating that I will not be friends with anyone spouting any kind of hate speech. After the election, there were so many sour grapes from the democrats who blatantly said every nasty thing they could think about Trump. Now, why would they do that when they know 1/2 of their "friends" voted for him? Why would they just insult all those people (as well as Trump) like that?

I know if somebody had called Obama the "N" word or Clinton a murdering "d" "c" they would have been horrified and Facebook would probably have deleted that poster's account. But Facebook was complicit in this. They are so pro-democrat that they allowed terrible things to be said about any republican, fake news to be spread, slanderous videos...

I had to tell several people to knock it off. In fact, I defriended a very close sister over that subject. She said her insults were opinions. I told her that an opinion is when you weigh in on an issue. What she was doing was just plain hate speech. I told her about my contract, why they have that stipulation, and that as adults we must set an example for the youth on social media. She told me that was MY problem to deal with, so I defriended her. These same people who insult, insult, insult then turn around and state how sad it is that some kid commits suicide because he was bullied on Facebook. Why are people so stupid?

I agree, it should be regulated. 18 and older only, if children are on Facebook their parents should face jail time. If you are on Facebook more than 1 hour a day in total time it should be a misdemeanor, more than 2 hours a felony.

For something that is killing out society so greatly, it social media was banned we would all be better off.

What blows my mind is how many people are employed by PR companies. Just go on LinkedIn. I learned that if you get employed by a PR company, you’re not allowed to talk about it or even allowed to post on your LinkedIn account that you work at said company until you’re not employed by them.

People laugh about the whole paid shill thing, but it’s really true. They do all kinds of stuff, product hype, political hype, anything you want if you pay for it. How did I find out about this? I requested a quote from these people at my business just to see if it was real. Guess what, it is. They have a sophisticated established business. A lot of them been around for ages, they were just known as ad companies.

So don’t be surprised if you find family members working for said companies. They even hire part time employees and get paid for posts they make.

I've wondered for a long time how the worst of them are not in jail for encouraging the commission of crimes while on the job - unless calling for the assassination of people they don't like and for bloody overthrows of the government aren't considered crimes in this country anymore.

JFC I really hope this thread is riddled with shills, not actual thick people.

The 'danger' social media presents to society is it is making peons get woke. They want you being spoon fed propaganda from CNN and BBC. No wait, scratch that - they want you being spoon fed America's Got Talent or the Voice, but if your are one of those pesky sheep that still has an interest outside of your reality TV, THEN they want you getting your ~news from MSM propaganda outlet.

It is dangerous to the establishment when the flock starts speaking to each other - it leads to ~terrible things like electing people the establishment didn't chose for us, or understanding the whole russia thing is a bullshit DNC scam.
