The dumbing down of the US populace is purposful in order to have a people easily manipulated psychologically and physically to meet the hierarchy's needs.

I wish the world could go back to the 80's. When the world was a much better place to live in.

I bet it must have been wonderful to be alive in the 40's-70's too.

"Technology may be getting smarter, but humans are getting dumber, scientists have warned.
...
Some have even contentiously said this could be because educated people are deciding to have fewer children, so that subsequent generations are largely made up of less intelligent people."

[link to www.dailymail.co.uk]

It's sad how the PC culture is trying to bury the evident reason for the decline, because it doesn't fit their "everyone's equal" doctrine. Of course, it is about smart and highly educated people choosing not to have kids.

I am a smart and highly educated person (PhD + professorship). I was also dead set against having children ever. I used to sugarcoat it by citing moral reasons ("the world's such a clusterfuck that it'd be immoral to have kids"), but my true reason was:

"I've spent two decades working 70 h weeks and sacrificed everything in my life - including my social life and health - to advance my career. There's no way in hell I am going to throw it all away by having kids."

Then I fell in love, got married and got shafted at work because I couldn't put in the hours like before. I was torn between my obligations at home and those at work, and conseqeuently I burned out and my priorities shifted. I downshifted at work and we had a child. I was 45, my wife was 37. At our age it was touch-and-go, but eventually my wife gave birth to a healthy child.

Anyway, the point of my little story is that most people like me will either choose not to have kids or they'll postpone it until it's way too late. Had I not burned out, my marriage would have ended up in a divorce, because that's how hell-bent I was on my career. While recovering from the burn-out, I had time to think about life and how there must be something else than work to it. The realization that I was destroying myself and causing grief to my wife who truly loved me really woke me up, but most people like me will never wake up.
 Quoting: Dr. Moran

The I work 70 hours a week excuse is why I don't want children is hilarious being that you take a typical Amish farmer who gets up before first light every morning 6 days a week and works from before dawn to dark. The Amish farmer still has the energy to raise a family of children and a dedicated to his wife for life. A Amish farmer at minimum 80 hours a week.

The so-called highly educated PhD is just did not want the responsibility of family life........period! There are people who don't want that responsibility but they don't sit around making lame excuses as to why they don't want the responsibility.

Re: Did the human race reach its intellectual peak between 1930s and 1980s and now we're in a downward spiral
Eugenics in principle is brilliant and necessary.
 Quoting: MissCleo

Eugenics is a dirty word to many people, by virtue of those who advocated for it in the past.

The principle is nothing more than the improvement or tailoring of a species through a process of selective breeding over many generations. All domesticated species that have been used for food or work over countless millenia have been subjected to this process, as have plants used for food or products. Nobody seems to have an issue when these species are tailored over generations, favoring some traits above others.

The issue seems to be when we start talking about doing the same thing with human beings. You're basically deciding that one couple's great-great-great grandkids are going to be academics, scientists, inventors, composers - and another couple's are going to be gas-station attendants and janitors.

And ideally, they are all going to be healthy and productive to a ripe old age and then die suddenly so there is no long-term drain on the system.

Frankly while eugenics may have been a great idea if practiced since the 1800's, it's likely of limited utility these days. Most of the working populace will be made obsolete by technology within the next 40-50 years. It's entirely possible that even the advanced professions will be surpassed by automated intelligent systems by then too.

Genetic therapy may help the human race faster and in a more efficient manner than eugenics at this point. And may, to an extent, allow an individual to decide for themself what traits they want to possess. But to what end? If all the important functions in society are performed by AI and robotics, who cares how smart, or strong, or productive you are capable of being?

It's a lot easier to come up with the "how" than the "why".
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70273097

Eugenics came about because the wasps were horrified by the immigrants of the latter 1800s.

The r.c. stepped up to the plate and sent legions of priests, etc., to care for this largely r.c. population, thus socializing and absorbing the costs thereof, even if every thing they did was not perfect.

This immigration gave the u.s. its only irish r.c.
president, who was assassinated.

The hatred of the r.c. persists.

Dumber in comparison to what?

In the dark ages, very few, save the clergy, could read at all.

Most American colonial small-farmers were illiterate, or nearly so.

Although illiterate, they knew how to survive and everyone had a trade, which requires a different sort of education and skill set.

Today's children know a lot of facts, but nearly all of it is useless in terms of day-to-day application. Moreover, there is by far more literate people on earth than any other time, but it is hardly put toward furthering understanding of anything meaningful.

If anything has been dumbed-down, it is the modern educational system.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72016185

This ^^^ is a good illustration of how "education" is by NO means an indicator of intelligence.

Just because someone is stupid enough to get good grades in their conformity training, doesn't mean they have a high degree of intelligence. It merely means they have a high degree of gullibility and moldability.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75878521

Some of us told the professors what they wanted to hear to get our grades, but were never indoctrinated. We always remembered the truth. We are the ones they fear the most, the ones who could go through years at University, pretend to be one of them as a means to an end, far to savvy to be detected, but never was what they thought we were.

There are a lot of us out here. We just don't throw screaming tantrums like the indoctrinated, libtarded ones. We prefer our stealth existence, until ...........

No the problem is that schools don't teach like they use to. In my day they taught people how to think so they could figure things out for themselves, now they teach our children what to think, By doing it this way they make people reliant on others to do things for them.

When you teach children how to think they don't need people to think for them, which means the government loses another dependent and they hate losing control of anything.
 Quoting: Daggo

Now, we must teach that at home.

Re: Did the human race reach its intellectual peak between 1930s and 1980s and now we're in a downward spiral
Intellectual peak was earlier, much earlier. William Shakespeare to Isaac Newton (the peak) to Thomas Paine. Sloped downward ever since. 1930 to 1980 is a period of often tolerable wreckage before an eventual bottoming out or collapse. This period (1930 to 1980) included Hitler and WW2, Korean War, Vietnam, The Cold War and so much more rotten stuff. If anybody considers that a golden age, they weren't paying attention.

The fall began when White men were pushed out of the board rooms and labs by women and minorities. It is just that simple. You can't replace a 100wt bulb with a 60wt bulb and expect the same light. That is the Truth. The American standard of living hasn't increased since 1978, or about the time that Affirmative Action Programs began in earnest.

I believe 1967 was our intellectual peak. That was the end of classical human education and culture. 1968 was the start of the decline of western society and we've been going downhill ever since. While technically we may be "richer" than in 1967, other than a few trinkets and gadgets we have today our lives are but a caricature of our former human eminence.
