Bi-polar disorder and possible associated violence
I've been thinking (uh-oh) about bi-polar disorder. Although I do not have bi-polar disorder, I have known of some who have this disorder. I've been thinking specifically about violence associated with it.

This is what I found so far:

The relationship between mental illness and violence is controversial. On the one hand, there is considerable unfounded stigma and discrimination toward the mentally ill based on the popular notion that psychiatric patients are dangerous people. On the other hand, there is a legitimate need for psychiatrists to identify and manage what risk of violence does exist in their patients. Research that examines how and why violence occurs in the mentally ill is necessary for psychiatrists to determine as accurately as possible which patients are prone to violence and to manage their care accordingly.

Do people go nuts when they go off meds for this condition?

Re: Bi-polar disorder and possible associated violence
I have been in a relationship for some time with someone who has bpd and they are psychotic at times. I don't mean they act psychotic, they literally change personality.

people say they are not all the same, but it's a lie.

I see the same traits in others with bpd, eventually multiple personalities arise. which the original is not aware of.

Re: Bi-polar disorder and possible associated violence
so you're specifically interested in the violence aspect of it?

yeh. there's a lot of violence, cruelty and games.

very confusing if you don't know what 'mood' they are in.

this isn't the first woman I've been in a relationship with bpd.

if you ask me this bpd is much more common than people realise.

general mental illness is much more common than people realise.

women are especially susceptible to mental illness to due abuse when young.

Well, There are 2 types of bipolar (some say 3) Type 1 is what you are probably know best. Type 2 is less on the up side and mainly on the depressive side. The type 3 would be a type that comes about from a medication.

Amphetamines are never prescribed because they induce hypomania/mania.
Would you rather a person be on antidepressants and live or not on them an die? They saved my life. I take a mood stabilizer. I've never hit ANYONE in my life.

I;ve dealt with them and the range of drugs they've prescribed for over 15 years.

I've seen what they've done to them. they had no idea what to treat it with in the beginning and they still don't, they just know better what not to treat it with.

Exactly, it takes time. A diagnosis cannot be made in one day. It never is.. it's usually a lifelong analysis. Yes a person can... like I do, know their moods. I have a 1 year cycle. Right now, I'm in the lowest part of the phase.

it's like saying side a and side b of a coin are two very different things.

they're still part of the same coin.

one leads to the other.

the fracture in the mind at the point of past trauma is the root of the cause.

the compartmentalization of memories results in split personalities whether they manifest or not.

the differences are just how bad the condition is.

splitting it all up into different medical names doesn't mean the root cause isn't the same.

Re: Bi-polar disorder and possible associated violence
I can tell you that it does seem to manifest especially in women in their mid to late 30’s and if left unchecked during a manic episode they do seem to become agitated easily, mood swings, erupt easily into anger & even violence over the smallest of things , I’ve seen them go 100 mph for days in a happy go lucky mood then suddenly crash in to a brick wall of self loathing and hating everyone & everything .

Sometimes Their meds will be upped in mg and depending on the RX and the person this can be a very bad combo which DOES exacerbate the violent tendencies, and alters their personalities altogether.

I have a 4th or 5th cousin ( ? ) and she is just nuttier than a fruitcake , LITERALLY- But she has Bi-Polar disorder and to every Bipolar component their is an OCD component and vise versa .

Her meds were making her so violent she had to go off of them and she seems to be much , much better now . No violent outbursts in the 3 years she s been off the medications!!

Re: Bi-polar disorder and possible associated violence
it's always caused by past trauma and starts at the point of trauma and gets worse or better depending how much compartmentalizing of thoughts goes on.

when other personalities gain more of the memory space they gain more of the control over the person.

I know you all don't really understand this and this I'm just making it up, but that's what happens.

the only way to treat it, is be honest while you still have control of the first personality.

find someone and confide everything in them about the trauma.

Re: Bi-polar disorder and possible associated violence
People with any mental illness are often labeled as potentially violent, even if they have no history of violence or any apparent violent tendencies. This stigma can be particularly strong when applied against people with bipolar disorder, which can be alarming and misunderstood by others.

The truth about the risk of violence among bipolar people is complicated. By some estimates, between 11 and 16 percent of people with bipolar disorder have had a violent episode. These typically occur during extreme moods or because of drug or alcohol use. But there are many people with bipolar disorder who are never violent.
