How would modern-day authorities react if an 18 year old man went out with a group of friends, to later return alone saying a dragon ate them?

How would modern-day authorities react if an 18 year old man went out with a group of friends, to later return alone saying a dragon ate them?
...Leaving him the sole survivor, too?

This isn't completely random as this happened back in 1962. An 18 year old man went out with a group of friends. It took him a long time to come back. Eventually, he was found alone and unconscious. When he woke up in hospital and was asked by authorities what had happened, he said that a dragon appeared out of a magical fog and proceeded to chase and kill his friends one by one, going into vivid and unnecessary detail about their ''blood-curdling'' screams of agony.

He then drew a sketch of a mythical dragon and showed it to the rescue authorities, as well. They believed him.

He subsequently told the 4 dead boy's parents that a dragon ate their sons. One of the mothers believed the dragon story and later appeared on a documentary about dragons, where she literally said something along the lines of ''a dragon ate up my son!'' - with a straight and dead serious face.

The 18 year old would reiterate his dragon story over and over and later became a violent drug addict, recluse and alcoholic.

The authorities just thought he was hysterical and told him to change his story to not include the dragon (however there are news archives where the dragon story is there).

Guy died in 2016. Apparently he required years of therapy to finally accept there are no dragons but I'm not sure how true that is.

He also sent letters to people who research ''sightings'' of dragons.

When you Google the names of the dead boys all that shows up are websites about dragon attacks which is sad.

In adulthood he refused to talk about the incident and said his ''life was completely changed by his experience with the killer dragon''!

If this happened in 2018 would the authorities react differently?

Sad as in pathetic? When I first read about this I honestly thought it was satire since all the cops and authorities either ignored or believed him, including the dead boy's parents (who he promptly told the dragon story to).

Then I looked it up further and found out this was an actual thing that happened.

btw in 1962 there were no "authorities". back then people realized there was no one on this planet higher than them.

Considering Millions/Billions of people believe 2000+ year old books that are only slightly less badly written than Harry fucking Potter.

Why not, could be dragons..?

There are legends told of people with the often subconscious ability to materialize thought into form and substance.

Poltergeist and other unexplained phenomenon that appear and disappear abruptly.

Then again, if I was an intelligent dragon who watched humans hunt most of my kind to extinction, coming out every couple hundred years to eat a few teenagers would probably be about as close to vengeance as you could expect to get.

Extra dimensional being? A really twisted Djinn having some fun times?

Or perhaps they stumbled upon something they were not meant to find, so the guardian obliterated them, and the dragon was just the form his mind chose to represent the guardian?
