Anybody take a genetic DNA test and shocked by the results?

Scandinavians are mainly Germans who moved north.

Maybe, the test is confusing irish with Scandinavian. Same thing happened to me. 17% Scandinavian and no Irish, when I'm sure I have a Irish great grandfather and no scandinavian ancestor that I'm aware off.

I don't have the slightest idea where my 15% native north american is coming from either.

I was sure I was 99% British Isles and figured if there was anything else it would be Jewish. But nope.

I'm only about 60% British Isles and the rest southern and northern european. There's 0.1% North African and an Iraqi fellow contacted me to say we're distant cousins. Wild. And zero Jewish.

Also learned there's a lot more philandery back in the old days than previously supposed. Lots of relatives are adopted or their parents or grandparents were adopted from homes for unwed mothers back in the day. Also a lot of NPE's (non-parental events) making it very hard to nail relationships. My theory is the Civil War tore apart southern society and ... well basically if you had goodbye sex with little Johnny and he never came home, you married whomever you could find when it was all over and your child got that guy's name.

Plus Northern soldiers raping and pillaging. Plus dislocation and population movement with men traveling through a town then moving on. It's a mess, genealogically speaking.

That goes back too far in time for genome testing to pick it up. Go back that far and we're all related which is not what genome testing is looking for. It's looking for differences.

Here's my thought: What neanderthals contributed, not everyone has. So if you *do* have it, it makes you different from people who don't have it. What Africans contributed, we all have. So there's no difference there to be found. It's all just statistics (clustering mostly), not omniscience.

That's true because how it really works is that they do clustering or principal components analysis with your dataset against all the other datasets IN THEIR OWN DATABASE. There is no fixed genetic marker for geographic location. It's just how you compare with all the other people who spat into 23andme's test tube. Still, I find it interesting.

That's not true. A woman cannot pass on anything about her male ancestry to a male child because she has no Y chromosome to give him. She gives him an X. Her male child inherits his Y ancestry through the woman's partner, his father.

If your dad went so far as to spit into a test tube for the DNA test, then isn't he curious about the results?

Mine shows the three above as well - and German/French - my "British Isles" was lumped - and that tiny bit of Malta.

Unfortunately there is no male living relative to get the Y chromosome information and that is where suspect there may be Native American genetics lurking.

I've done ancestry and 23, the results are the same basically, one more specific in one area the other more specific in the other. I did my family tree many years ago, so I knew who I was and the tests confirmed that. The very first rule of genealogy is don't believe what grandma and dad said about your ancestors, they are NEVER right. I also put my raw results on gedmatch, which give you your admixture (which is your ancient strands of DNA) that is really cool because you get to see where you match with the ancient bones (clovis, denisova and many others) they have discovered and what percentage you share with that person (and of course even us northern Europeans begin in Africa) My tests have allowed me to trace my Scandinavian (Swedish) through the kings of Sweden to the king of Turkey to Seleucus I Nictor 300bc...my admixture shows all of this but I had no idea, this is just one line of the tree and there are many lines, kings, chaucer, Charlemagne, Monet . Genealogy is fun and exciting the dna test is just the beginning. We are all royal, we are all the same

Not true. Any male cousin who is the son of my father's brothers will be carrying the same Y chromosome that a brother would've carried. For example I have no brothers and my dad has passed, but he had two brothers one of whom had three sons. Those three sons all carry the same Y chromosome my brother would be carrying.

Men have only one Y chromosome to give a child (unlike the X chromosome which is complicated because mom carries two and dad carries one, and also because meiosis isn't straightforward with X chromosomes).

Because men have only one Y to give, men can trace their ancestry back a long ways in the male line (assuming no "non-parental events").
