Girls Gone Wild Should Not Be Welcomed to Blacksburg

There has been much hype about the confirmation of Girls Gone Wild coming to Blacksburg next weekend. Oge-Chi’s, a popular bar downtown, has agreed to host the event Saturday, April 20. Petitions, complaints, and letters are circulating around Blacksburg, including an online petition, which to date has nearly 2,000 signatures and a Facebook group entitled “Hokies Against Girls Gone Wild” with 1,200 members thus far.

Girls Gone Wild typically displays intoxicated college girls exposing themselves in pornographic manners and engaging in illicit sexual activities. It also objectifies these women for millions of people to see. Why would we want to bring that sort of publicity to our very own Hokies?

Granted, I will not blame Oge-Chi’s for wanting to host such an event. Management is only thinking of the revenues and profits such an event would bring in, not the moral dilemma associated with the problem. In fact, GGW held an event at Radford University in 2005, and did so with great popularity amongst the student population. When people think of Girls Gone Wild, they think of alcohol and women. These two key factors could increase the amount of customers at a popular night club, ultimately meaning an increase in overall revenue.

Radford University is concerned that the results of GGW visiting their campus was severely damaging to the school’s reputation. This event is just another example of why a lot of people don’t take RU seriously as an educational institution.

Radford has historically had the reputation of a party school. However, Virginia Tech has always been a prestigious institution and should not be viewed otherwise. Hosting a GGW party in Blacksburg and publicizing VT students to the rest of the world in this context will not only damage the school’s reputation, but will represent Tech’s female population as wild and promiscuous instead of professional and scholarly.

I’ll be the first to admit that one of the most popular things to do in Blacksburg on a Saturday night is to go out and enjoy the nightlife that downtown has to offer – drinking, dancing, and socializing. However, I feel that coming out and exploiting women while they are under the influence is a form of sexual assault. If you think about it, coercing a woman to do sexual activities while intoxicated is illegal because of their inability to consent. How is requesting girls to expose themselves in a manner they would never do if they were sober any different?

I don’t think any girls would be the first to say: “Hey, let’s get drunk and show our naked selves to millions of people across America!” It is wrong in so many different aspects and I encourage my fellow Hokies to sign the online petition, join the Facebook group, and put the producers of Girls Gone Wild where they belong – OUT of Blacksburg.
