About 15,000 National Grid customers were without power Monday night after thunderstorms swept through eastern Schenectady County, northeastern Albany County, and south-central Saratoga County. At 8:47 p.m., a line of severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Glenville to Colonie, moving northeast at 15 mph, the weather service said. Damage to roofs, siding, and trees was expected, forecasters said. Utility crews worked Sunday and Monday to restore power after a short but severe storm struck Sunday afternoon in Schenectady...

Mount Anak Krakatau Volcano

Intermittent explosions continue to occur almost every day at the volcano. Recently, their frequency has increased somewhat. The latest event, although not observed well due to cloudy and hazy conditions, was reported a few hours ago from the volcano observatory: "Eruption with ash clouds at 14:25 UTC (07:25 local time). The eruption lasted for 72 seconds." Weak, but regular heat signals are present on satellite data confirming this activity as well. ...

Volcano Activity in Russia on July 31 2019 04:56 AM (UTC).

During our pilot expedition to the northern Kurile Islands, we observed the volcano during 16-20 and 26-27 July 2019: Ebeko's northern crater was very active, almost constantly degassing and producing ash-rich eruptions at irregular intervals of typically few hours.

About half of them consisted in small to moderate, but passive ash venting, while the others were explosions that generated ash plumes of typically 1-2 km height and drifting / slowly dissipating rather long distances (few tens of km) mostly towards the NW.

Due to the lack of significant rain lately, the extremely fine-grained brown-gray ash itself seems to cover much of the northern part of the island. Near the volcano (within approx. 2 km), it forms a deposit about 1 cm thick. Ebeko's stronger explosions were sometimes noisy and ejected abundant blocks, some of which were incandescent during the night....

Flash Flood in India on August 01 2019 04:11 AM (UTC).

At least six people have died in rain-related incidents as torrential downpour lashed Gujarat's Vadodara city till late Wednesday night, forcing authorities to shut down the airport and terminate or reschedule several trains. The city received 442 mm of rain in just 12 hours between 8 am and 8 pm on Wednesday, the highest in Gujarat in the period, said a release by the state government.

Of this, 286 mm of rain fell in just four hours ending at 8 pm, the release added. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places over Gujarat. "Strong winds, speed reaching 40-50 km/h, are likely to prevail over along and off Gujarat-Maharashtra-Goa coasts.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas," the weather department said. All schools and colleges have been ordered to remain shut on Thursday. "The downpour has stopped in Vadodara. But still, there is heavy rain forecast for other parts of the state...

The weather that was: July 2019 9th warmest, less rainy than normal

"Overall, July was three degrees hotter than average in Detroit, 76.8 degrees compared to 73.6. Not only was the average high last month two degrees hotter than the historical high, 86.7 compared with 83.4, but the average low was about three degrees hotter, 66.8 compared with 63.9.

The month was also drier than normal, with only one day, July 19, having more than a quarter-inch of rain. It rained almost 1.75 inches that day, but the month as a whole saw only 2.63 inches of rain; 3.37 inches are typical for Detroit in July.

Alex Manion, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said there was a "very inactive pattern" in the jet stream in the area. While there were a number of thunderstorms, they were "very isolated in nature.""

Biological Hazard in Massachusetts. USA on August 02 2019 04:49 PM (UTC).

More than 150 great white sharks have been spotted since June off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, a popular East Coast vacation spot, according to scientists. This week alone, more than 20 great white sharks were spotted off the Cape, prompting three days of beach closures in a row beginning Tuesday.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy's sharability app indicates that 161 sharks have been spotted off the coast of Massachusetts since June 1. "We've seen more white sharks this past July, the last month than we did last year at this time," said Gregory Skomal, a marine biologist with the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game. High water temperatures and a high population of seals, which sharks feed on, off the coast of Cape Cod are attracting them, Skomal said.

The population of great whites is also rebounding after humans exploited the species for a long period. But the increase in shark sightings doesn't necessarily indicate a higher number of sharks off the Cape. "We have to realize that it's been a really hot summer, and more and more people are going to the beach, more and more people are carrying cellphones, and they have drones and they have all kinds of electronic toys that allow them to see the sharks,...

Biological Hazard in Iceland on August 04 2019 02:46 AM (UTC).

Some 20 pilot whales have died stranded in mysterious circumstances on the south-western coast of Iceland, emergency services said Saturday, only two weeks after a similarly unexplained mass stranding had already killed dozens of the long-finned cetaceans. The dead whales, part of a group of 50 stranded whales, were discovered late Friday near Gardur, some 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the capital Reykjavik.

According to Icelandic media, locals began rescue efforts to save the whales even before emergency teams arrived. "Around 90 volunteers worked all night to keep the animals wet," David Mar Bjarnason, a spokesman for the Icelandic research and rescue association, told AFP. "We had to wait for high tide to get them back into the sea," Bjarnason said.

Critical Infrastructure Disruption in Indonesia on August 04 2019 12:38 PM (UTC).

Tens of millions of people on Indonesia's heavily populated Java island were affected by a widespread electricity outage Sunday after the state utility PLN reported disruptions at several power plants.

The shutdown plunged buildings in the sprawling capital Jakarta -- home to some 30 million people -- into darkness and forced the temporary closure of its new mass rapid transit system. Passengers were safely evacuated from several MRT carriages when the power went out, according to the system's operator, while commuter trains were also affected....

...

...was expected to last until later Sunday -- caused sporadic disruptions in mobile phone services and cash machines, while some apartment buildings were left in the dark. "The blackout has been going on for hours and it's extremely hot in my apartment because the air conditioner is off," said 30-year-old Jakarta resident Maya Larasati.

Outages also turned off some traffic lights, aggravating the capital's notorious congestion. PLN said the blackout was caused when a gas turbine at a major power plant went down and by disruption at another facility. Both are on the western end of Java. "We're doing our best to fix the system so the power comes back to normal," it added. ...

Flood in India on August 04 2019 01:15 PM (UTC).

A total of 74,068 people was affected by the floods in river Godavari, and 17,632 were shifted to relief camps. The heavy flood battered at least six mandals in East and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh. The second warning signal issued at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowaleswaram continued as 13.58 lakh cusecs of floodwaters flowed in. About 7,500 cusecs of this were being let out into the delta canals and the rest into the Bay of Bengal.

No casualties have been reported in the flood-hit areas as teams of National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force reached out to the affected areas with essential supplies and food. Power supply remained cut off while the road communication network was also badly damaged in the two districts, according to the State Disaster Management Authority.

As per the preliminary estimate, damages to roads and other infrastructure were to the tune of Rs 6.45 crore. In all, people in 280 villages in West and East Godavari districts were facing the brunt of the flood fury, according to the authority...
