Tropical Storm in Barbados on August 27 2019 04:40 AM (UTC).


Much of the eastern Caribbean island of Barbados shut down on Monday as Tropical Storm Dorian approached the region and gathered strength, threatening to turn into a small hurricane that forecasters said could affect the northern Windward islands and Puerto Rico in upcoming days.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley closed schools and government offices across Barbados as she warned people to remain indoors. "When you're dead, you're dead," she said in a televised address late Sunday. "Stay inside and get some rest."...

As fires continue to rage in Brazil, nearly a million hectares (6,200 sq miles) of farmland and unique dry forest have been destroyed by weeks of blazes across the border in Bolivia, where the flames have now reached the country's Amazon region.

Initial estimates indicate 600 hectares of rainforest have been destroyed in the north-eastern region of Beni, where the fires now threaten indigenous populations. "This is the biggest ever catastrophe for biodiversity in Bolivia," said Fernando Vargas, an indigenous leader in the Isiboro Secure Indigenous Territory and national park, known as Tipnis by its Spanish acronym....

Flash Flood in Spain on August 27 2019 12:23 PM (UTC).


The Madrid region was hit by a powerful hail storm on Monday evening, with heavy rainfall bringing roads to a standstill, causing problems on a number of lines on city's underground Metro system and causing flight diversions at Barajas airport. Firefighters responded to more than a thousand call outs, most of them for minor issues such as fallen tree branches or flooding in garages and basements. Spain's meteorological agency AEMET recorded more than 9,300 lightning strikes in six hours.

The municipality hardest hit by the storm was Arganda del Rey, located to the southeast of the capital, and where the hail fell particularly hard. The city is in a natural hollow, with mountains on either side, which contributed to flash flooding in three of its main streets. The water was so strong that parked cars and street furniture were swept away by the current....

Tornado in Spain on August 27 2019 12:37 PM (UTC).


Spain's freak weather did not stop there. The sunny coastal city of Malaga was hit by a tornado late on Monday. Residents of Malaga shared videos and images of the terrifying tornado ripping through Campillos in Malaga.

As the tornado ripped through an electrical pylon, it caused flashes of fire. The tornado has caused torrential rain and flooding in the affected areas...

Flash Flood in Japan on August 27 2019 08:44 AM (UTC).


Torrential downpours triggered by a weather front hit Nagasaki Prefecture in western Japan on Tuesday morning. It's estimated that the cities of Hirado and Sasebo, as well as the town of Saza, got up to 110 millimeters of hourly rainfall before noon.

Mudslide warnings have been issued for some areas of Nagasaki and neighboring Saga Prefecture. Weather officials say the front will linger near Japan through Thursday, and that heavy cloudbursts with lightning are expected across much of the country. ...

More than 200,000 people have been evacuated on an island in Japan's south as life-threatening levels of record rainfall hits. About 240,000 residents of Japan's southern island of Kyushu have been ordered to evacuate over fears heavy downpours could cause landslides, floods and other natural disasters.

Japan's meteorological agency issued its highest emergency warning level of five this morning following the record levels of rain....

A violent hailstorm buried parts of Spain in ice Monday evening, wreaking havoc across the country's eastern region. Photos and videos shared across social media depict the town of Arganda del Rey, located about 20 miles outside Madrid, in a state of chaos as raging floodwaters swept cars and other debris through the streets.

The dangerous weather pattern resulted in multiple flights being diverted from Madrid's Barajas International Airport, as well as delays and suspensions across the city's underground metro system. Isabel Diaz Ayuso, president of the Madrid region, said firefighters responded to more than 200 calls in the storm's aftermath, which left homes and shops throughout multiple cities filled with ice and water...

At least two people have been killed as torrential rains sparked floods and landslides on the Japanese island of Kyushu. A rare emergency warning and evacuation orders for almost 850,000 people were in place as the severe weather struck.

Dramatic images showed people wading through knee-deep water in flooded streets after several rivers broke their banks on Wednesday.

The highest alert level of five was put in place by Japan's meteorological agency. One man was killed when his car was washed away in Saga, where some areas were hit by more than 100 mm (4 inches) of rainfall in an hour,...

Volcano Eruption in Italy on August 29 2019 03:44 AM (UTC).


A spectacular explosion from an Italian volcano Wednesday sent locals and tourists running for cover to avoid a shower of rocks and ash. The eruption of Stromboli, on a small island off the coast of Sicily, sent a gigantic plume of smoke billowing into the sky. Firefighters reported that widespread vegetation fires had broken out. Burning material from the explosion fell from the crater and rolled down to the sea, La Repubblica newspaper reported.

Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the explosion could be classified as a "paroxysmal event" and produced a pyroclastic flow -- a fast-moving mixture of gas, rock and volcanic ash -- of several hundred meters into the sea. It added that the smoke plume reached a height of 2 kilometers (1.2 miles)....

Flash Flood in Morocco on August 29 2019 04:33 AM (UTC).


At least seven people were killed in flash floods in Morocco on Wednesday, following torrential rains in mountains in the south of the country near Taroudant, 600 kilometers (373 miles) south of Rabat, local authorities said. Search operations are ongoing to find survivors, said authorities in a statement.

Most of the victims were swept away by a sudden flash flood while watching a football game on a pitch built next to a dry river near the village of Tizrt, a local resident who asked not to be named told Reuters, confirming videos shared on social media showing the scene.

The southern Moroccan mountains, known as the Anti-Atlas, are arid and rarely receive rain in the summer....

Flash Flood in Uganda on August 29 2019 11:47 AM (UTC).


Five people feared dead after a flooded river burst following torrential rains in Eastern Uganda. "Relatives of the people suspected to have been buried under mud across over 800 meters have been desperately trying to recover the bodies but they are being hampered by the lack of appropriate tools,"said James Ingoi is Bulambuli's acting deputy chief administrative officer and also the chairperson of the district disaster management committee, reports New Vision.

The rain also washed away and submerged several coffee and banana plantations according to the deputy chief....

A tornado has swept through Hainan island in southern China, killing eight people and injuring two others. The official Xinhua News Agency said the tornado struck Nada town in Danzhou city early Thursday morning.

State broadcaster CCTV said dormitories for workers collapsed at two construction sites, killing eight people....

Two people were confirmed dead on Wednesday as heavy rains pounded southwest Japan, prompting flood and landslide warnings and orders for 870,000 people to seek safety. Nearly a million more people were advised to leave their homes after the country's weather agency raised the alert to its highest level for parts of northern Kyushu. The emergency warning is issued "if there is a significant likelihood of catastrophes". ...

The fire and disaster management agency said it had already received multiple reports of flooded houses in Saga and Nagasaki prefectures. "We are seeing unprecedented levels of heavy rain in cities where we issued special warnings," a spokesman for the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. "It is a situation where you should do your best to protect your lives," weather agency official Yasushi Kajiwara said. He also urged those living in areas currently under evacuation advisories to act quickly....

Biological Hazard in Hawaii, USA on August 30 2019 04:46 AM (UTC).


Five whales died, including four that were euthanized, after a mass stranding Thursday on a beach on the Hawaii island of Maui. Ten melon-headed whales were found stranded alive early in the morning on Sugar Beach in the coastal resort community of Kihei.

Hours later, a whale calf believed to belong to the same social group was found dead on the beach about a mile to the north, said David Schofield, the regional marine mammal response coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. NOAA veterinarians determined four of the whales were in grave condition and nothing more could be done to save them, Jeffrey Walters, NOAA's wildlife management and conservation branch, said in a statement.

The animals were made comfortable with a sedative and then humanely euthanized to relieve their suffering, he said. The remaining six whales were refloated to the ocean but stranded again, Schofield said. NOAA initially said the prognosis for two of the six wasn't good, but they eventually made it out. Officials plan to monitor the area on Friday just in case they return...
