Nuclear Event in Russia on August 22 2019 04:23 AM (UTC).

Russian officials earlier this week shut off a block of the Beloyarsk nuclear power station after picking up a "false" response from the facility's safety system, according to Rosenergoatom, the utility branch of Rosatom, the state nuclear corporation...

...

The Defense Ministry sought to censor that report, but by the following Tuesday, Russia's state weather agency Rosgidromet said that radiation levels had spiked by four to 16 times beyond natural background levels in the city. It was also reported that Russia had shut down many of its radiation monitors in the wake of the accident, fueling suspicions that Moscow was obscuring the true extent of the damage. Rosatom has confirmed that five of its scientists died in the accident, though a final death toll remains unknown...

Forest / Wild Fire in Brazil on August 22 2019 03:56 AM (UTC).

Wildfires in the Amazon rainforest have hit a record number this year, according to research carried out by Brazil's space research centre (INPE). It cites 72,843 fires, marking an increase of 83% compared to 2018 - the highest since records began in 2013. Since Thursday, INPE said satellite images spotted 9,507 new forest fires in the country, mostly in the Amazon basin, home to the world's largest tropical forest, which is seen as vital to countering global warming.

Images show the northernmost state of Roraima covered in dark smoke. In Sao Paulo on Monday, the smoke caused a blackout in the city which lasted about an hour. It was after strong winds brought in smoke from forest fires burning in the states of Amazonas and Rondonia, more than 2,700km away...

...

People have also been posting about the issue on Twitter using the hashtag #PrayForAmazonia to try to raise more awareness. ...

Landslide in China on August 22 2019 04:12 AM (UTC).

Nine people were killed and 35 were missing after multiple mudslides struck Aba Tibetan and Qiang autonomous prefecture in Sichuan province on Tuesday, local authorities said. As of 7 pm on Tuesday, rain-triggered disasters had affected 17 townships in the prefecture, injuring six people, three severely, according to the prefectural emergency management bureau.

Aba has had about 25 days of rainfall since July 1, greatly increasing the saturation of the soil, creating a situation prone to geological disasters like landslides and mudslides,...

...

However, experts with the administration said that the middle part of the province is more likely to have heavy rain in the next few days that could trigger mountain torrents, and governments and residents there should be prepared to control and prevent disasters. ...

Biological Hazard in Alaska, USA on August 22 2019 03:08 AM (UTC).

From the Koyukuk River to the Kuskokwim, to Norton Sound, to Bristol Bay's Igushik River, unusually warm temperatures across Alaska this summer led to die-offs of unspawned chum, sockeye, and pink salmon. Warm waters also sometimes this summer acted as a "thermal block" - essentially a wall of heat salmon don't swim past, delaying upriver migration...

Much of the eastern Caribbean island of Barbados shut down on Monday as Tropical Storm Dorian approached the region and gathered strength, threatening to turn into a small hurricane that forecasters said could affect the northern Windward islands and Puerto Rico in upcoming days.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley closed schools and government offices across Barbados as she warned people to remain indoors. "When you're dead, you're dead," she said in a televised address late Sunday. "Stay inside and get some rest."...

Forest / Wild Fire in Bolivia on August 27 2019 12:39 PM (UTC).

As fires continue to rage in Brazil, nearly a million hectares (6,200 sq miles) of farmland and unique dry forest have been destroyed by weeks of blazes across the border in Bolivia, where the flames have now reached the country's Amazon region.

Initial estimates indicate 600 hectares of rainforest have been destroyed in the north-eastern region of Beni, where the fires now threaten indigenous populations. "This is the biggest ever catastrophe for biodiversity in Bolivia," said Fernando Vargas, an indigenous leader in the Isiboro Secure Indigenous Territory and national park, known as Tipnis by its Spanish acronym....

Flash Flood in Spain on August 27 2019 12:23 PM (UTC).

The Madrid region was hit by a powerful hail storm on Monday evening, with heavy rainfall bringing roads to a standstill, causing problems on a number of lines on city's underground Metro system and causing flight diversions at Barajas airport. Firefighters responded to more than a thousand call outs, most of them for minor issues such as fallen tree branches or flooding in garages and basements. Spain's meteorological agency AEMET recorded more than 9,300 lightning strikes in six hours.

The municipality hardest hit by the storm was Arganda del Rey, located to the southeast of the capital, and where the hail fell particularly hard. The city is in a natural hollow, with mountains on either side, which contributed to flash flooding in three of its main streets. The water was so strong that parked cars and street furniture were swept away by the current....
