Floods across the island of Madagascar has killed at least 12 people this week, with 18 missing, after unseasonably heavy rain, the national disaster office said on Thursday.Parts of Africa have experienced heavy rain in recent months because the Indian Ocean is warmer than usual, partly as result of a cyclical weather phenomenon and partly because oceans are warming everywhere....

Extreme Weather in Kazakhstan on January 23 2020 10:43 AM (UTC).


For the past 24 hours 86 snow-blocked people were rescued in Akmola region, the emergency situations department reports.
As of 10:30 a.m. January 23 Nur-Sultan-Shchuchinsk, Nur-Sultan-Karaganda, Nur-Sultan-Yerementau highways are closed down in both directions due to severe weather conditions.

Rescue works are underway across the region. The emergency situations department urges not to use these roads until authorities declare it is safe to drive....

Extreme Weather in France on January 23 2020 10:38 AM (UTC).



More than 1,500 people have been evacuated from their homes in south west France after Storm Gloria caused widespread flooding.


Two departements - Aude and Pyrenees-Orientale - remain in red alert for flooding, while French weather forecaster Meteo France has also issued an orange alert for the neighbouring departements of Ariège and Haut-Garonne.The warnings will remain in place until at least Friday morning.Pyrenees-Orientales is also on alert for the risk of avalanches.

Overnight about 1,000 homes in the area lost power and 1,500 people were evacuated as rivers burst their banks.The warnings come after an estimated two months of rain fell on the area in just two days...

Flood in Brazil on January 25 2020 06:20 PM (UTC).


Heavy rains have caused floods and landslides in southeastern Brazil, killing at least 11 people, according to the Civil Defense.All of these people died in the state of Minas Gerais, two of them today in the regional capital, Belo Horizonte.

Rainfall is expected to continue in Minas Gerais, as well as in other parts of Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. "

The incident took place near Cape Svobodny in Mordvinov Bay. About 600 ice fishing lovers got cut off from the shore because of an ice crack. Some of them left the ice floe on their own, while the rest were brought ashore by rescuers.

Russian emergency units rescued 217 amateur fishermen who had got trapped on an ice floe near the southern coast of Russia's Sakhalin island on Sunday, the regional office of the Russian emergencies ministry has said."At 6:30 p.m. [7:30 GMT], all amateur fishermen who needed evacuation were brought to the shore by rescuers...

Flood in Brazil on January 28 2020 07:06 AM (UTC).


Over 30,000 people have been displaced by heavy rains in southeast Brazil that also killed 54 people and left 18 missing.The storms in recent days caused floods and landslides, submerging entire neighbourhoods and sending homes tumbling down hillsides in the states of Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro.

Rains subsided by Monday, but were expected to resume later this week in some areas.Flooded roads created violent rapids, sweeping up victims, cars and other debris...

Local authorities warned that the Belo Horizonte metropolitan area, home to nearly 6 million people, could see up to 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain in the next three days.The city had 171 millimeters (6.7 inches) over one 24-hour period from Thursday to Friday, the highest rainfall in 110 years. Complex Emergency in Russia on January 29 2020 10:37 AM (UTC).


Russia's emergency services rescued 536 ice fishermen after they got stranded on a giant ice floe that broke off the island of Sakhalin in eastern Siberia, officials said.Around 60 more people were able to get back on the shore on their own Tuesday evening, emergency officials said.The rescue operation lasted for almost seven hours.

Footage of the incident showed groups of people using smaller pieces of ice as rafts and trying to row to the coast on them, as the ice floe with stranded fishermen slowly drifted further away from the land.


According to some of the fishermen, by the time they had been rescued the rift between the ice floe and the coast was already 200 meters wide. It is the third time in a week that emergency services in the Sakhalin region had to rescue ice fishermen stuck on drifting glacial masses.

On Jan. 22, around 300 people got stranded on an ice floe, and on Sunday 600 others did.Local authorities blamed the incidents on fishermen ignoring safety warnings and going ice fishing despite the danger of being stranded on ice floes. ...

Landslides and floods from torrential rains on Indonesia's Sumatra island killed at least seven people and displaced thousands, the disaster agency said Wednesday.Large areas of Central Tapanuli district in North Sumatra province were inundated with up to 2.5 metres (6 feet) of water after rivers burst their banks shortly after midnight, said Agus Wibowo, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency...

Epidemic in Nigeria on January 29 2020 10:43 AM (UTC).


The Federal Government says it is committed to containing Lassa fever which has claimed 41 lives in parts of the country since the beginning of 2020. The Minister for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, who spoke in Abuja, revealed that at least two health professionals were among the 41 deaths recorded; adding that there were at least 258 confirmed cases recorded across 19 States in the country.

Ehanire, who said all hands must be on deck to contain the spread of the disease, urged Nigerians in various parts of the country to practice good hygiene and protect their foods from rat contamination. On the outbreak of Coronavirus in China and other countries, Ehanire said the Federal Ministry of Health had issued advisories to relevant agencies of government and the public on the outbreak of the disease. "The risk of importation was high even though no single suspected case has been reported in Nigeria," he said...

Residents across B.C.'s South Coast began the month of February cleaning up the mess from heavy flooding, with some communities seeing evacuations and road closures.Heavy rains that began Thursday afternoon continued to fall in buckets throughout Friday and into the overnight hours, raising water levels across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

By the time Environment Canada lifted its rainfall warnings for the coast early Saturday morning, Metro Vancouver had seen between 55 millimetres at Vancouver International Airport and 138 millimetres in Pitt Meadows.The North Shore and Metro Vancouver remained under a flood watch Saturday, with parts of Maple Ridge and Port Coquitlam still seeing road closures due to pooling water Saturday morning

.While most roads were later reopened, trails and parks were closed in those and other municipalities.Other parts of the region saw pooling in farmers' fields, particularly those surrounding highways south of the Fraser River in Surrey and Langley.Water ended up flooding the road at 201 Street and 100 Avenue in Langley, however, after a water main burst open just after noon.

Flooding was seen on Highway 10 and 177B Street in Cloverdale Friday night, with water seen gushing out of the manhole cover in the middle of the intersection amid heavy rush hour traffic.


The heavy rains also caused two mudslides to come down along the Crescent Beach bluff in the South Surrey-White Rock area Friday, stalling freight train traffic until later Saturday.However, Amtrak passenger train service between Vancouver, B.C., and Bellingham, Wash., has been suspended, with service not expected to resume until at least Monday...

New video released by the New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) on Tuesday, February 4, shows the extent of the damage to Milford Road, the road leading to Milford Sound where over 300 people, including 195 tourists, were reported to be trapped.

Nine people were rescued by helicopter from a stretch limousine that became trapped on the highway, and a further 27 people were rescued from a bus on Hollyford Road, according to the New Zealand Herald. Authorities said that Milford road could remain closed for a week. "Rain has continued to fall in very large volumes, and the ground conditions remain very unstable," said Peter Brown, a journey manager with the NZTA.

A state of emergency was declared for the Southland region by the Civil Defence Emergency Management group on Tuesday. Residents of Gore and Mataura were advied to "prepare their grab bags (consisting of medications, clothing and personal items including documents) and be ready to evacuate if required." ...
