161 mph! Weather balloon at Forks sees all-time summer wind speed at 35,000 feet

"The daily morning weather balloon launched from Forks Thursday morning caught a summer breeze like no other, measuring a blistering 140 knot (161 mph) jet stream wind at the 250 millibar pressure level -- roughly 35,000 feet.

This appears to be the strongest wind speed ever recorded at that level in summer by a wide, wide margin, besting a Sept. 2 reading that was 128 knots (146 mph)."
