Nearly 3 million people are struggling with flooding, the worst in two years, according to the disaster management and relief ministry. As water levels began to recede, authorities expressed concern about outbreaks of infectious diseases in the country of more than 160 million....

Two officials from the agriculture department said early estimates suggested farmers had lost agricultural products worth more than $40 million. "The losses will be substantially higher when we get a full list from different flood-affected areas," said one official.

About 9 km of embankments, 172 km of roads and nearly 250 bridges and culverts had been damaged by the floods, according to a preliminary assessment by the disaster management and relief ministry.

In neighboring Nepal, torrential rain caused landslides that swept away five houses on Tuesday, killing eight people in Gulmi district in the west, police said. Four others were missing and two were injured, police official Dipak Basnet said. Authorities said the latest deaths take to 100 the number of people killed in rains in the past two weeks in the Himalayan nation. Thirty others are missing across Nepal.

Snow Storm (Blizzard) in France on July 26 2019 06:07 PM (UTC).


While much of France is experiencing a historic heatwave, the country's most prestigious cycling event was stopped Friday due to a freak hail and snowstorm. Stage 19 of the Tour de France was neutralized Friday when hail, snow and ice-covered the course at the Col d'Iseran, a mountain pass located more than 9,000 feet above sea level.

Tour organizers cited slick and flooded conditions, saying the riders could not complete the course safely. There are some reports of landslides in the area. Crews quickly brought out snowplows to try and clear the slush on the roads, and some plows were buried under the remains of a large landslide....

The hot air that smashed European weather records this week looks set to move toward Greenland and could take the world's second-largest ice sheet close to or below the record low set in 2012, the United Nations said on Friday. Clare Nullis, the spokesperson for the UN World Meteorological Organization, said the hot air moving up from North Africa had not merely broken European temperature records on Thursday, but surpassed them by two, three or four degrees Celsius, something she described as "absolutely incredible."

"According to forecasts, and this is of concern, the atmospheric flow is now going to transport that heat towards Greenland," she told a regular UN briefing in Geneva. "This will result in high temperatures and consequently enhanced melting of the Greenland ice sheet," she said. "We don't know yet whether it will be at the 2012 level, but it's close."

Melting of Greenland's ice sheet, a key part of the global climate system, would lead to rising sea levels and unstable weather. ...

Wildfires in mostly remote parts of Alaska this summer have burned more than 3,400 square miles under dry and warm conditions. KTUU reports one lightning-sparked fire in southwest Alaska prompted the evacuation of the Donlin Gold mine Tuesday. Another led to the evacuation of a remote hunting lodge that serves as a checkpoint in Alaska's Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

As of Thursday morning, there were 246 active fires burning, with 27 actively fought and the rest monitored...

Volcano Eruption in Japan on July 26 2019 02:41 AM (UTC


A small eruption was observed Friday on Mt. Aso in southwestern Japan, spewing smoke as high as 1,600 meters, the weather agency said. The eruption occurred at 7:57 a.m. at the No. 1 crater of Mt. Aso's Nakadake, which is 1,506 meters above sea level, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

It was the latest in a series of small-scale eruptions at the volcano in Kumamoto Prefecture since April....

A suspected meteorite - glittering, magnetic and weighing more than 10kg - startled farmers when it crashed into a paddy field by an Indian village on Monday evening. Some men were working in the field in Mahadeva village, Bihar state when the object fell out of the sky. "A group of farmers was working in the fields when they heard an unusually loud thud," said Shirsat Kapil Ashok, a district magistrate, according to The Wire India.

"When they looked around to find the source of the sound, they spotted the object lying in a hole - about five feet deep - that was dug into the ground by the impact of the fall." Onlookers said the suspected meteor sent up smoke and caused people nearby to flee,...

Indonesian authorities issued a flight alert notice after a volcano erupted near the country's third-biggest city of Bandung on Friday (July 26) afternoon, sending ash some 200m into the air and triggering warnings for people to stay away.

The orange Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) alert issued by the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry's Geological Agency indicates that volcanic ash particles are still lingering 1,000 feet above the crater of Tangkuban Parahu volcano, about 30km north of Bandung, the capital of West Java province.

"This level (of the situation) may risk the flights. The VONA alert also shows that volcanic ash clouds are heading to the south and north-east directions,"...
