Tornado in Luxembourg on August 10 2019 05:22 AM (UTC).

A huge tornado ripped across southwest Luxembourg on Friday leaving at least seven people injured, authorities said, as images posted on social media showed the powerful twister whipping roofs and other debris into the air.

With winds reaching 128 kilometres per hour (80 miles per hour), according to the meteorological office, the tornado smashed through towns near the borders with Belgium and France on Friday evening.

Footage posted on social media showed the swirling winds towering above homes and roads and tearing up roofs and tree branches high into the air....

Parts of London, the southeast of England and Wales have been hit by a large-scale power cut, meaning some traffic lights are not working, according to Transport for London (TfL). Climate Change in USA on August 10 2019 02:59 PM (UTC).

Sea ice in Alaska is melting faster than ever before. As reported by The Independent, Alaskan climate specialist at the Alaska Centre for Climate Assessment and Policy Rick Thoman shared the alarming news on Twitter earlier this week. According to Thoman, all the ice within 150 miles of Arctic water surrounding Alaska has completely melted.

The alarming melting rate is a result of July's sweltering hot weather, with rising temperatures strongly linked to the climate crisis. "Alaska waters now completely clear of sea ice as last ice in the Beaufort Sea offshore Prudhoe Bay melted away," Thoman tweeted on Aug. 4. "The closest ice to Alaska is now about 150 miles (240km) northeast of Kaktovik."...

...

Alaska's waters are not the only place experiencing abnormal melting this summer. A few weeks ago, an alpinist trekking the French Alps noticed that so much snow melted on the top of a mountain in response to Europe's massive heatwave, that a lake had actually formed. ...

Tropical Storm in China on August 10 2019 02:13 PM (UTC).

At least 13 people have been killed and 16 others are missing in a landslide after Typhoon Lekima hit eastern China, national television reported. The tragedy occurred in the municipality of Wenzhou, which was in the path of the storm as it made landfall overnight, CCTV said.

Super Typhoon Lekima slammed into southeastern China early Saturday, bringing torrential rain and heavy winds that knocked out power, downed thousands of trees and forced more than one million people from their homes, state media reported. The monster storm made landfall in the early hours in Wenling City packing winds of 187 kilometers per hour, and was expected to churn up the east coast towards Shanghai, Xinhua news agency said.

More heavy rain was forecast for the Shanghai area as well as the eastern provinces of Anhui, Fujian, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, with authorities warning of possible flash floods, mudslides and landslides caused by the downpours. In Zhejiang province alone, nearly 300 flights were canceled, and ferry and rail services were suspended as a precaution.

More than a quarter of a million people were relocated in Shanghai, where the high-speed maglev train that links the city to one of its airports was suspended...

Flood in India on August 09 2019 03:45 AM (UTC).
Situation Update No. 1 on August 10 2019 04:11 AM (UTC)

Heavy rainfall in four districts of western Maharashtra has claimed 30 lives so far. For the past week, the districts of Pune, Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara have been battered by incessant rain and severe flooding, and the situation is likely to get worse with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting another two to three days of heavy downpours.

Stepping in with rescue and relief measures, the State government, with the help of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the defense forces, has evacuated approximately 2.5 lakh people from the affected districts. According to the State government and the IMD, a depression in the Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast resulted in torrential rainfall across various central Indian States, including Maharashtra....

...

"The rains have battered our farms. As it is our agriculture is in a bad way. After these rains I don't know what our condition will be," said Ramesh Atmaram Patil, a sugar cane farmer from Satara....

Rare Lightning Strikes Detected Near the North Pole on Saturday

Several lightning strikes were detected near the North Pole on Saturday, something rarely seen in that region of the Arctic Ocean.

It's uncertain how many lightning strikes in history have occurred as far north as Saturday's event, but based on the worldwide lightning climatology map shown below, they are hardly seen in that region of the Arctic.

Forest / Wild Fire in Canary-Islands (Esp.) on August 11 2019 09:57 AM (UTC).

A massive fire on the holiday island of Gran Canaria has forced hundreds of people to flee their homes as "overwhelmed" firefighters try to contain the inferno. More troops were being called in to fight the out-of-control blaze in the mountains, which flared up on Sunday morning and has ripped through 900 hectares on the summit.

Huge plumes of smoke can be seen from all parts of the volcanic island - a popular destination for Britons - and from Tenerife, and they were also seen in satellite images taken from space....

Hailstorm in Montana, USA on August 12 2019 06:25 AM (UTC).

Cathlene Millay said she had just returned home to Townsend Saturday afternoon when something outside caught her attention. "All of a sudden, there were some big knocks on the roof and on the ground," she said. "We just looked outside, and all heck broke loose from there." A strong storm brought large, damaging hail through the area.

Millay recorded a video of the hail covering much of her yard. "We're getting the biggest hail you've ever seen!" she said in the video. Many of the hailstones were around two inches in diameter. Millay collected a number of them and saved them in a bowl in her freezer. "I've never seen hail like that in my 60 years here in Montana," she said. ...

...

"There are people with gutters punctured through from the big hail, gardens annihilated - it's pretty bad," said Millay. "Ours looks pretty good considering some of the other ones." ...

Some of the worst flooding has been reported in Mossblown, with the town of Annbank cut off to bus services this morning. Stagecoach confirmed their services were unable to pass the worst of the flooding in Mossblown.

Prestwick has also been badly hit, while residents in Troon, Cumnock, Auchinleck Ayr, and Coylton are among those reporting hazardous driving conditions. Heavy rain is expected to continue falling until later tonight....

Fire in Greece on August 12 2019 11:52 AM (UTC).

A large fire has broken out in the Athens suburb of Peania and spread quickly overnight, prompting an evacuation of nearby residents on early Monday morning. Local authorities said the forest fire broke out at about 3:30 a.m. local time (0030 GMT) in the town of Peania, an eastern suburb of the Greek capital, at the foot of Mount Hymettus.

More than 100 firefighters and dozens of vehicles had been immediately sent to the fire-ravaged site, authorities said, adding that police were deployed to help evacuate local residents.

Due to the combination of strong winds and a new heatwave which has gripped Greece this week sending temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius, Greek authorities have declared a state of "red alert" for this weekend. ...
