Yesterday will go down as the most prolific severe weather report day in Jan (441 and counting) since at least the year 2000 & likely since records began. The previous greatest number of filtered reports was January 29, 2013 w/ 425. (Other notable Jan report days in thread below)

"Ontario residents woke up on Sunday to a highly unusual alert from provincial authorities reporting about an incident at the nuclear power station in Pickering.For those in Canada who haven't watched HBO's Chernobyl, the news from Pickering was a good reason to look up some info on the dangers of mismanaged nuclear power.Authorities in the Province of Ontario on Sunday morning sent out an emergency bulletin after what they called an "incident" at the Pickering Nuclear Power Generation Station.

The alert assured locals that there had been "no abnormal release of radioactivity" within close proximity to the station, without going into further detail.Although Pickering officials soon said that the alert had been put up by mistake - presumably triggered by a test of the emergency alert system - the panic had already spread across social media.Completed in 1971, the Pickering plant is sitting on the northern shore of Lake Ontario just east of Toronto.

Scheduled to be shut down in 2024, it is Canada's third-largest nuclear power station, producing about 16 percent of Ontario's power and providing over 7,000 jobs, if staff and suppliers are included.The plant has seen several accidents of varying severity since the 1970s, including a loss of coolant accident in 1983 and a spill of 185 tonnes of heavy water in 1994."

We are bracing tonight==and into mid week this week--a
blizzard-like snow event up in N.W. Montana.

At this point we are way BELOW our average snowfall amounts.

I would prefer, though, that the snow pack build slowly
rather than have a "mega-dump" this week and a near blizzard.

We'll see! It's really cold and windy right now. Have
the hot chocolate ready!

Per NWS Little Rock: A 27 mile path that was 5 miles wide had straight line winds of 80-90 MPH in south central Drew county. Incredible.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: NOAA has determined that GOES-14 and GOES-15 will be placed into storage on Friday, 31 January 2020. From that point forward, no space weather observations will be available from those satellites. To prepare for this event, SWPC will be temporarily halting the production of GOES-14&15 data for 25 hours from 16 UTC on 22 January 2020 through 17 UTC on 23 January 2020. The purpose of this test is to ensure, for our operations, that we are entirely independent of GOES-14&15 before they are turned off for good the following week.

Roads in the Sierra will be slick tonight into Tuesday morning with accumulations generally 2 to 5 inches for Sierra valleys and 6 to 10 inches in the higher Sierra and over passes. As always, check Caltrans or NDOT for road conditions before traveling.
