DeVos also decried the federal government’s initiatives to improve education. “We saw two presidents from different political parties and philosophies take two different approaches. Federally mandated assessments. Federal money. Federal standards. All originated in Washington, and none solved the problem. Too many of America’s students are still unprepared,” she said. And she touched on a favorite topic, school choice. “Choice in education is not when a student picks a different classroom in this building or that building, uses this voucher or that tax-credit scholarship. We all deserve to have our kids get the BEST. Not to be forced to accept subpar simply because of a boundary line. Let's make it happen Betsy. |

Although you feel this way, the facts contradict your viewpoint. In the United States, up until about World War II, teachers were put into classrooms with a two year certificat from a Normal School, a teacher's college. You can read about this practice in the old popular series about Anne of Green Gables, set in Canada. If you think that these 2 year teachers in one room schools were not capable of teaching, let's look at a sample 8th Grade Graduation test [link to www.washingtonpost.com (secure)] One thing that is strikingly different is that the teachers entered teachers' training with an actual education that is the equivalent or better of you 6 years in the university. I can't argue that in some schools a male teacher would probably be better at keeping order, but that is another matter. *** Good deeds bring rewards, bad actions bring troubles. I tried to help my 1st grade granddaughter with her math last night and I thought I was going to pull my hair out!! I still don't understand it!! Why did they have to make addition and subtraction into a huge ordeal anyway?? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74277820 If you want kids to learn, you need to start teaching them basic math and reading before they ever hit kindergarten. *** Good deeds bring rewards, bad actions bring troubles.
