Re: thickness. The gasket thickness affects compression. That thickness also affects fuel delivery timing in 2 strokes (you didn't say 2 or 4 stroke, or I missed it.)
Hi temp rtv is what I used when I used to build race saws. But removing gasket thickness required modification of port timing along with higher compression. (again, 2 strokes) 4 stroke it would merely increase compression.
