Could I use an aluminum can for a diy high heat gasket?

Also, should I use a soda can or one of those thick beer cans? The gasket was kinda thick like the beer can not a soda one.

Inquire about the melting point of aluminum, that should be your answer. You can buy good gasket product at a parts store.

I'm gonna scout for a thick beer can.

Al will work,steel works better.its about longevity.even leather will work.a thick piece of cardboard.its about compression is all.will it hold up to pressure.

So e people on the vids say not to use certain gaskets like manila envelope or cardboard for high heat applications. I think that's because it'll turn it into charcoal, at least those 2.

You should be all right then. Get a tube of permatex hi tempto use with it.

The temperature it take to ignite gasoline is 495F. The hottest a two stroke cylinder head should get is 450 degrees continuous running, 500 for short periods.

Re: thickness. The gasket thickness affects compression. That thickness also affects fuel delivery timing in 2 strokes (you didn't say 2 or 4 stroke, or I missed it.)

Hi temp rtv is what I used when I used to build race saws. But removing gasket thickness required modification of port timing along with higher compression. (again, 2 strokes) 4 stroke it would merely increase compression.

Short answer, yes. Long answer redneck mechanics have been using things like this for decades on motors that produce way more horsepower than anything sold by the major car companies when you need to space intakes, heads, headers, and a hundred other things, just make sure you use some high temp silicone for air/water tight seal.

Keep in mind that the rate of expansion due to heat is different between aluminum and copper. This may make a difference for a gasket with a tight fit.

soda cans are deep drawn from 1100 aluminum (pure, soft)

Get one of those disposable aluminum baking pans... it will be a bit thicker and larger and won't be curved so it should be easier to trace out a gasket.

If you want to match the original thickness of the head gasket layer it 3 deep, that's how modern metal head gaskets are actually built.

Aluminum warps at high Temps but as a gasket under torque I dunno, I would imagine it might expand and contract more.. dunno..let us know..on the do's and don't of your experiment.

Aluminum squeezes out when under pressure. You will never keep a constant torque on a pure aluminum gasket. Usually when you see aluminum used in a gasket it is layered on top and bottom of another stable core material that will not squeeze out while the aluminum seals scratches and dents when it flows under pressure.

Keep in mind two dissimilar metals with an acid form a battery that may lead to an early failure of the gasket
