I agree! I was a young kid but remember everyone freaking out and those stupid duck and cover drills in school!
Everyone knew where the closest fallout shelter was!

All of my relatives lived in Miami area and they were all beyond freaked out!

Dad wanted to build a bomb shelter in the yard! Even as a kid I knew this wouldn't work! OK we go in it, how long? ,food?, water? bathroom? power? It would have been good for a tornado shelter only.

While today has my attention I don't feel anywhere near on edge like I did back then!

There are lots of risks out there now. I'd agree that there might even be a nuclear strike in the next few years. And climate change could well have big impacts on the way people live, and their exposure to nasty weather events. And I'd agree that misuse/offensive use of new technology has the ability to cause major disruptions that could bring about the partial collapse of society.

But this is the doomsday clock we're talking about. Not 'it'll be extraordinarily nasty weather' clock, or 'financial markets might collapse' clock or even 'a city or two might be destroyed' clock. All those things would be terrible and could well result in millions of lives lost. But, as bad as that could get, it wouldn't be doomsday.

The official policy in 1962 was MAD. A single strike would have resulted in escalating retaliation that would have taken out pretty much every major city in the developed world. Millions of people would have died in the strikes, and many millions more in the nuclear winter that followed. In my book, that's a much better fit with doomsday.
