Quoting: The Original Mind Was just over at my wife's grandparents' house. Turns out he has a 10/22, so I fired a few shots. Nice gun. Anyway, he was showing off a couple of pistols he has, a 380 and a 9mm. For some God-only-knows reason, he chambered a round into the 9, ejected it, forgot the loaded clip was still in, and pulled the trigger. Gun goes off right there in his room, me standing beside him, my daughter in the other room. Thankfully no one was hurt. Don't do that. UPDATE: The bullet hit a 1-inch water pipe. The basement is flooding. I'm heading over to help carry up buckets of water. Always, Always, Always treat every gun like it's loaded. Even if you have to check it a dozen times. It's lucky Gramps didn't kill someone. Luck doesn't always appear. If you want to get along with the gunnies here, never refer to the magazine as a "clip". Yeah, that's solid advice. So what's the difference between a magazine and a clip? A magazine is a "container" into which shells are loaded. When you see a detective on tv push a button and a metal thing falls from the base of his pistol and he then pushes another, identical advice, this one loaded with more shells, into the base of the pistol and uses his palm to push up and "seat it" in the pistol, that's a magazine. A clip is a much smaller piece of metal, typically, that holds shells in a configuration that allows them to be loaded into the magazine; most commonly but not exclusively a rifle. The SKS mentioned earlier, normally has a fixed magazine and the user carries extra rounds on 'stripper clips' which, once positioned properly over the magazine can, with finger pressure, be 'stripped' from the clip into the magazine so the rifle is again ready to be fired. Idiots refer to magazines as "clips", it's a sign of stupidity and disrespect to the firearm. Military ammo comes on a clip when you're loading your M16 mags Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76223174 The M1 Garand rifle is actually directly loaded using clips. The M1A is an upgraded version that is magazine fed. If you google these two rifles, you will see what the difference between a clip and magazine are. |

My advice comes from 25 years shooting as a uspsa, 3 gun, sheriff deputy, and now firearm trainer for snipers. Get a Glock 19, put xs big dot sites on it, buy an incog holster and mag holder, get an soe gun belt, 5 magazines and 1 k rounds. Then go to your local range and take a few small classes that don’t cost much. Master this. |

I've seen people recommending a 308 bolt action rifle for training. Why that gun? How can I tell a good 308 from a bad 308? Quoting: The Original Mind Price really. These weapons operate at high pressures and exert a lot of force onto the moving parts. Tool Steele is not cheap and having MPI inspected parts insures there are no cracks from the forging or tooling process. Palmetto state armory may b the only exception to the rule as you can get quality parts and weapons for 10-15% less than the "name brand" manufacturer. Ammo is just as important. Find what ammo fits your needs and practice with cheaper ammo with the same specs. Tulammo is a good practice round but very dirty. |

Its very easy to rack the slide and has a regular safety as well as a grip safety. Very little recoil as well. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10485453 Jesus no! 380 is a crap round and a terrible first gun. The damage a 380 does is about as practical as attacking with a toothpick. 9mm is the smallest caliber anyone should carry. Though the projectile is the same the powder charge makes all the difference. It's no different than a .40 vs 10mm only .40 will rock your world when hit. |

Smith and Wesson m&p sheild .40 performance center edition add a tlr 6 weapons light and laser with a tulster IWB holster and get you concealed carry permit. Practice drawing and getting on target when you have spare time (no ammo needed) and dry fire the piss out of it keeping focus on how your front sight moves. Learn to keep it steady throughout the pull of the trigger. Then do the same at the range(with ammo) you will be proficient in no time. |

That being said, I can say that the Glock 19 is a good choice. Glocks are well constructed and can put a multitude of rounds downrange with very few or no failures. Should anyone choose to select that particular firearm, I heartily recommend spending time at the range to become familiar with it. It is not only important to become familiar with the characteristics and behavior of the firearm, but it is also fun! I always like to challenge myself to achieve the best shot groups during every range adventure.
