Neither, its been foisted on people by the rich. That's because the rich really own just about everything. They portion a small amount of what's left out to the people that work. If you don't work you only get enough to live on (welfare) which is paid for by the people that work. It didn't used to be this way because long ago before the rich owned everything the was enough to go around for everyone and man and women only had to forage for food and build shelters. Now the rich are in full control.

I was made to feel like a useless waste of space and food and dead weight, simply because I was a stay at home mother.
I grew food.
I studied.
I looked after my family.
