Ministers hit back at 'childish' Putin and warn of 'powerful' retaliation; Theresa May set to say Russia behind nerve gas attack

Home Secretary Amber Rudd hit back at 'childish' Vladimir Putin today - amid signs Theresa May is poised to blame Moscow for the nerve gas attack.

Ms Rudd accused the Russian president of trolling Britain by jibing in an interview that he would never be able to forgive 'betrayal'.

And she warned that the government will respond 'powerfully' if the Kremlin is found to be behind the apparent 'hit' on double-agent Sergei Skripal in Salisbury last week.

The combative stance came as the Prime Minister chaired a meeting of the National Security Council which was updated on the investigation into the attempted assassination.

Counter-terrorism police and intelligence officers are thought to have presented evidence that Moscow ordered the hit in Salisbury over a week ago.
