I don't what caused it, but if it happened before it can happen again. |

Did you know? Quoting: NOLAangel [link to volcanoes.usgs.gov (secure)] These are some of the excerts from the above USGS link: June 20, 1857 Pigeon Mountain volcano, Georgia The New York Times, June 20, 1857 A Volcano in Georgia. A writer in the Sentinel states that a volcano has lately made its appearance in Pigeon mountain, about ten miles from Augusta. On the 24th, ult., the mountain was violently agitated, and the citizens in the vicinity were aroused and terribly frightened by the commotion. When observing the mountain they were more than ever terrified, for a brilliant light was plainly seen issuing from the summit. The atmosphere soon became strongly impregnated with a disagreeable sulphuric odor. On the following day a thick torrent of smoke and ashes ascended from where this light was previously seen…. That is strange. Doing a little digging, while the USGS says there are faults in the area, they also state that the mountain(s) are primarily limestone, dolostone and chert (appearing to be 100% sedimentary). [link to mrdata.usgs.gov (secure)] Located in Dade Co. Pigeon mtn can be found to the left of where it says Walker. [link to mrdata.usgs.gov (secure)] I wonder what those people saw? Big ass moonshine operation blowing up? |

Big ass moonshine operation blowing up? According to the link, Pigeon Mountain was one of the longest eruptions. It started on the 24th and continued to the 29th. " It had continued up to the 29th ultimo about as above described, emitting smoke and ashes without intermission. The crater is thought to be about 100 yards in diameter. No one has yet ventured near enough to ascertain anything of its general depth." Nice links by the way. |

Clingman. In short, his theory seems to point towards the weight of the ocean pushing down on the crust in one area causing a corresponding rising of the crust in another area far from the ocean. Though he doesn't seem to know if it has been volcanic more than just a periodic release of pressure through the weak spots in the rock which get melted back together...also, he was hoping someone was keeping track of the height of the mountain tops to see if they are rising. He also didn't come out and reference the "Seneca Guns" or "Brown Mountain Lights" by name but he did allude to them in recounting a similar effects in a Mexican silver mine...the implication is that the mysterious booming sounds are due to the bottom of the crust sloughing off into the area below the mantle creating a kind of sonic boom sound. |

I was on the second floor, near the window at the time, it shook the house and momentarily made the windows rattle. It lasted a good 15 seconds which may not seem like much to a Californian, but in N.Y.C. for the EARTH to be rumbling to the degree it SHAKES houses is unheard of ! But the really weird thing is the SOUNDS I heard emanating from the ground.... It was like a weird grumbling groan echoing through a HOLLOW CHAMBER, it didn't sound muffled as if it was coming through layers and layers of soil, and it struck me that there were LAVA TUBES beneath us. The neighborhood there is very hilly and I could easily imagine it being part of a dormant volcano network. Just wanted to add that. |
