EU does not accept Belarus election results, preparing sanctions - Foreign policy chief Borrell

The European Union is refusing to recognize election results in Belarus and is preparing sanctions over the 'rigged' vote and the heavy-handed police response to protests, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has confirmed.

The EU "doesn't accept election results" in Minsk, Borrell tweeted on Friday evening, adding that work has begun on "sanctioning those responsible for violence [and] falsification" of the vote.

Borrell's comments come after a conference call of 27 EU foreign ministers, which ended in a consensus that the Belarus elections "were rigged," according to Slovakian FM Ivan Korcok.

“We cannot ignore the facts of election fraud and the use of force,” Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said after the meeting, adding that the EU foreign policy unit has been tasked with putting together a list of officials to be sanctioned.

Mass protests began shortly after the presidential election last Sunday, which the incumbent President Aleksandr Lukashenko won in a landslide, according to official results. Thousands have been arrested and two people have died in the five days of unrest, with viral videos showing law enforcement brutally dispersing demonstrators calling for regime change.

Ahead of the ministerial teleconference, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for “additional sanctions against those who violated democratic values or abused human rights” in Belarus and expressed confidence the foreign ministers will “demonstrate our strong support for the rights of the people in Belarus to fundamental freedoms and democracy.”

Opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who has fled to Lithuania after Belarus security services said they intercepted a plot to assassinate her, called for peace on the streets – but insisted the election had been rigged. Lukashenko maintains the vote count was fair.

Puerto Rican-man sentenced to 17 years for production of child pornography

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a Puerto Rican man was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Court Chief Gustavo A. Gelpí to 17 years in prison followed by a period of 30 years of supervised release.

On Nov. 20, 2019, Enrique Sánchez-Hernández, of Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, pleaded guilty to one count of production of child pornography. According to the government’s evidence, Sánchez- Hernández made a recording of his sexual abuse of an 8-year-old minor using his cellular phone. A citizen discovered the recording in June 2018, when the abandoned phone was found in Río Grande. The Puerto Rico Police Department referred the case to ICE HSI, who were able to identify Mr. Sánchez-Hernández from the video and arrest him.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas W. Cannon of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation Section.

This investigation was conducted under HSI’s Operation Predator, an international initiative to protect children from sexual predators. Since the launch of Operation Predator in 2003, HSI has arrested more than 25,000 individuals for crimes against children, including the production and distribution of online child exploitation material, traveling overseas for sex with minors, and sex trafficking of children. In fiscal year 2019, more than 3,500 child predators were arrested by HSI special agents under this initiative and more than 1,000 victims identified or rescued.

Ex-F.B.I. Lawyer Expected to Plead Guilty in Durham Investigation

WASHINGTON — A former F.B.I. lawyer intends to plead guilty to falsifying a document as part of a deal with prosecutors conducting their own criminal inquiry of the Russia investigation, according to three people familiar with the case.

The lawyer, Kevin Clinesmith, 38, who was assigned to the Russia investigation, plans to admit that he altered an email from the C.I.A. that investigators relied on to seek renewed court permission in 2017 for a secret wiretap on the former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, who had at times provided information to the spy agency. Mr. Clinesmith’s lawyers said he made a mistake while trying to clarify facts for a colleague, the people said.

Clear from Durham charge that the FBI supervisor wanted to know if CIA confirmed "in writing" that Page was not a source because of distrust of CIA -- but whether in writing or not, no allegation that Clinesmith lied about the fact Page was not a source. That's a federal crime?

Here is Durham theory: even though Clinesmith gave the complete and accurate email to DOJ to use in the Page FISA, when asked by an FBI agent if the CIA had represented IN WRITING that Page was not a source, Clinesmith said yes, when CIA had not said so explicitly in writing. 1/2

Clinesmith is charged with adding the words "not a source" to an email about Carter Page, but no where does the charge say that is false, i.e. that Page was a source for the CIA. Without that, how is the addition "materially" false? Compare with Barr's materiality std for Flynn.

A woman who says she was just 11 years old when Jeffrey Epstein sexually abused her is among nine accusers who filed a new Manhattan lawsuit against the dead pedophile’s estate.

The women — who filed the case without using their real names — say they were sexually abused and in some cases raped in incidents as early as 1978 and as recent as 2004, according to the Supreme Court lawsuit filed late Thursday.

A Florida woman, referred to in court papers only as Jane Doe XIII, says that in 1993, when she was only 11, Epstein “sexually assaulted, abused, battered and digitally penetrated her on three, separate occasions,” as well as forced her “to perform oral sex on him,” the documents say.

Another woman from Tennessee says that when she was just 13 in 1978, Epstein abused “and raped her multiple times,” the court documents show.

The two women are among five of the plaintiffs who say they were underage when they were abused by the multimillionaire. The other four women in the suit were adults at the time of the alleged abuse, the papers state.

After UAE, Bahrain will be next to sign peace deal, says Israel official

Bahrain is likely to follow the UAE in signing a peace agreement with Israel, an Israeli official said yesterday. The Hebrew Kan channel quoted the unnamed official as saying “Bahrain is expected to be the next country, which will establish official relations with Israel”.

No time frame was specified, or further details given, although the report by the broadcaster also mentioned that a senior US official told Palestinian media that Bahrain and Oman are expected to normalise ties with Israel in the near future.

Bahrain was the first Gulf state to officially comment on the diplomatic move between the UAE and Israel. According to the Bahrain News Agency, Manama welcomed the peace agreement and extended its congratulations to the UAE for “taking steps to enhance the chances for Middle East peace”.

Jared Kushner, a senior adviser and son-in-law to President Donald Trump also hinted that another Arab country could make a deal with Israel “in the coming days”.

Yesterday Trump made the announcement that the UAE and Israel had formally normalised relations. In exchange for recognition, Israel will allegedly “suspend” its plans to annex large swathes of the occupied West Bank. The agreement, known as the Abraham Accord was lauded by the UAE’s the National, which framed the event as Israel freezing its expansionist plans thanks to UAE diplomacy.

It also mentions that other Gulf nations, including Qatar and Oman, have ties with Israel, but the only Arab states with full diplomatic relations are Jordan, Egypt and Mauritania after peace agreements in 1994 and 1979 and 1999, respectively. Although Mauritania froze relations as a result of Israel’s war on Gaza in 2014.
