Flashback: Obama Campaign Denied Biden Backed Bill Because Of Payments To Hunter

When Barack Obama was first running for president back in 2008, his campaign defended his running mate Joe Biden for supporting a senatorial bill despite the fact that his son Hunter was working for a bank that supported the legislation.

Obama Campaign’s Past Comments

Aides working on Obama’s campaign confirmed to The New York Times that Hunter’s consulting work for MBNA, which earned him $100,000 a year, was something they looked into when vetting his father as a potential running mate.

The bill that Biden was supporting made it harder for individual consumers to declare bankruptcy, which benefitted the credit card industry that included banks like MBNA, according to Fox News. Not only was the bank paying Hunter from 2001-2005, which is the year the bill was passed by the Senate, but bank employees had also donated to lawmakers from both parties.

Biden himself had received more than $214,000 in campaign contributions from MBNA employees by 2008.

Obama Campaign Defends Biden

Despite this, Obama’s aides defended Biden, claiming that he was not influenced by either the campaign donations or his son’s work.Obama campaign spokesman David Wade even claimed at the time that Biden worked hard for a bipartisan bill and sought changes to it that MBNA did not like.

“He took plenty of knocks from the largest employer in his state because he demanded changes in the bankruptcy bill,” Wade alleged. “But legislating requires compromise. Senators cast tough votes. Congress worked on the bankruptcy bill for nearly a decade, over five Congresses, to forge a bipartisan compromise.”

Most of the Democrats in the Senate opposed the bill, with Obama being one of them.

US president Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani dragged Romania’s name into the scandal between Trump and former vice president Joe Biden but left everyone guessing what could be Joe Biden’s controversial connection to Romania.

“I haven’t got to Romania. Wait until we get to Romania,” Giuliani said in a Fox News interview over the weekend, without going into details.

Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, who is now under scrutiny for his dealings in Ukraine and China during his father’s term as US vice president, apparently also had business interests in Romania, according to the local media. Hunter Biden was involved in real estate business in Bucharest and allegedly tried to lobby in favor of local real estate tycoon Gabriel Popoviciu in 2017, before and after he was sentenced to jail in a high-profile corruption case, sources close to Popoviciu told local G4Media.ro.

In May this year, reports by Fox News and the New York Times mentioned Hunter Biden’s connection to Gabriel Popoviciu.

“In addition to his work in Ukraine for the energy company Burisma, Hunter Biden advised a Romanian businessman with ties to the United States, Gabriel Popoviciu, whose real estate dealings had come under investigation, according to people familiar with the arrangement, which has not been previously reported. The investigation, which came as the United States and its allies were pushing Romania to clamp down on corruption, led to Mr. Popoviciu’s conviction and a prison sentence,” reads an article in the New York Times.

However, there is no evidence so far that Hunter Biden tried to leverage his father's influence to help Popoviciu or any other wrongdoing.
