Maybe he didn't want the land deforested for crops? Or, maybe, it is a natural phenomenon, and allows greater growth of young saplings/growth for grazers. We are ultimately so clueless and keep trying to impose our values on a system that is far beyond our abilities to understand/grok. (nature) On a whole different level, this being a movie/show, we are continually reminded how insignificant we are (ego) and that SHOULD be reassuring, as we are SOUL/SPIRIT. Enough for the moment.
