‘One Small Nibble for Man’: 3D Printer Makes Meat in Space

October 9, 2019

MOSCOW (AFP) — The prospect of astronauts tucking into a roast dinner has grown slightly closer after a successful experiment used a 3D printer to create meat on the International Space Station.

The bioprinter produced beef, rabbit and fish tissue using magnetic fields in microgravity, a Russian medical technology company involved in the experiment said Wednesday.

The experiment — an international collaboration involving U.S., Russian and Israeli companies — was carried out in September by cosmonaut Oleg Skripochka in the station’s Russian segment using a 3D printer developed in Moscow.

The creators say it is the first to create a small amount of artificial meat in conditions of weightlessness.

“It’s one small nibble for man, one giant bite for mankind,” said Yusef Khesuani of 3D Bioprinting Solutions, the Russian laboratory that created the bioprinter.

There must be at least a few medical uses for this tech, right? Of course there are. This is really exciting stuff.

Bones would be proud.

reading the article there was mention of fabricating different human tissues for transplanting such as skin for burn victims.

Didn't actually read the article, just skimming thru today so thanks for filling that in. Guess from skin it's just a matter of complexity to go to livers or kidneys or other organs. All is living tissue and the functions vary only by degrees, really. Waaay over simplifying but step by step we'll get there.

Exciting frontiers ahead. WWG1WGA
