Since the democrat were the ones fighting to keep slaves, these were the ones who did not want to free slaves in any way at all. I can't say Davis was like this, his Vice President sure was and worse, he became gov. of George after the war, when he could not get set into congress because his state had not passed the amendment to their constitutions, so no set to go back to, so he became the new governor under reconstruction. Horrible man, he said Black people were not human, that must have been during the Darwin groups who were saying anyone not them were not human or slow-witted.

It is interesting that later the democrat took congress and passed laws as they did. Everything the Republicans had put in to help the slaves they removed. Republicans did not gain the congress again until the 1920s and were paying off the debt so the federal reserve crashed the economy, they sure did.
So, in short, did these southern and northern democrats lose the war? You would have to wonder because they passed the 1871 amendment!
