Wow, I've never heard of this, although I've never lived anywhere with a large practicing orthodox population.

She'd just keep stepping over it. She'd come in at a normal time, 8 or 9am, but then would conveniently leave early to make it home before sundown. They fired her pretty quickly. When she left, she left a bunch of stuff in her cubicle. She then showed up two weeks later wanting to get whatever she left.
