Amazon warehouse workers have to pee into bottles.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos might be the richest man in the world, with a net worth of around $112 billion (£78.4 billon), but those working on his warehouse floors are so desperate to keep their jobs that they don't even take time to go the toilet.

Rushed fulfilment workers, who run around Amazon's warehouses "picking" products for delivery, have a "toilet bottle" system in place because the toilet is too far away, according to author James Bloodworth, who went undercover at a warehouse in Staffordshire, UK, for a book on low wages in Britain.

Bloodworth told The Sun: "For those of us who worked on the top floor, the closest toilets were down four flights of stairs. People just peed in bottles because they lived in fear of being disciplined over 'idle time' and losing their jobs just because they needed the loo."

Amazon is famous for tracking how fast its warehouse workers can pick and package items from its shelves, imposing strictly timed breaks and targets. It issues warning points for those who don't meet their goals or take extended breaks.

A survey of Amazon workers, released on Monday, found almost three-quarters of fulfilment centre staff are afraid of using the toilet in case they miss their targets.

"[Targets] have increased dramatically. I do not drink water because I do not have time to go to the toilet," the survey quotes one anonymous worker as saying.

Another said: "The target grows every year. I do not have two more legs yet to make the 100% to pick, where you actually need to run and go to the toilet just during the break. Packing 120 products per hour is terribly heavy.

"You have to pack two products per minute. You do not have time to drink water because you go to the toilet after every evening sends messages to the scanner with the target and tells you to hurry."

The survey, compiled by worker campaign platform Organise, also found that workers felt considerably more anxious after joining Amazon.

Another employee said she was ill while pregnant, and was still handed warning points.

It's not just Amazon.. It's ALL warehouses. Picking orders is tough work and frustrating, mentally and physically exhausting. Meeting goal times is next to impossible and you often have to work 7 days a week because turnover is so high.

Yep. Not just Amazon.. Other warehouses in the UK, and i've worked at some of them.. To meet targets you will literally be working to the bone, very heavy constant work. Slave wage. Zero hrs contracts, very minimal rights..

I hate working in the damn warehouse. I worked as a contractor for a contractor for a contractor for some stupid ass company. There was one toilet for 200 people. The made us work 12 hours a day 7 days a week with a one hour break in there somewhere. I lasted about 4 days.

That's not an excuse for people not being able to go to the bathroom.

Jeff Bezos has the money to personally have more bathrooms and better facilities installed for his workers in all his warehouses.

Will he though?

No.

No, people need to boycott Amazon and let the owner know what he's doing is not right.

Not when he can personally afford to build better facilities for his workers and pay them more.

No we will not excuse evil by turning a blind eye, while people like you continue to purchase from there and make him more rich.

I sure hope you don't believe in our military policing the world either.

If they want to get Bezos attention decide on a date and time and have a worldwide warehouse Pee In. Piss on the floor, gallons of piss and call the health department to declare the warehouses unsafe, that'll put a crimp in his greed.

Come on with Amazon stuff slready.
This is one of the easiest warehouses to work at. The standard is easy to get. The standard is how fast you have to move to meet the production goals. The product is extremely light on average as well and most of the jobs are automated so you don't have to move. No they do not pay you to use the bathroom at any warehouse that is on standard. That is what breaks are for. This is warehousing and logistics in general. We laughed when we saw the 60 minutes special. If they came to my work people would be outraged. They won't be use unlike amazon people cany go without the service my warehouse provides.

They're working up high on mezzanine floors. Not much can be done about having to walk to the bottom to get to the toilet.

I think too much is being made of the pee bottles. What's happened is the author has asked them how does trying to reach targets affect your day and they've said 'we don't bother going to the toilet because its quicker just to use a bottle'. Well thats not Amazon's fault.

Perhaps the author should also tell us how often the staff stop work to chat. Or how many times they make a mistake and have to go back and rectify it. I refuse to believe the ONLY reason staff struggle with the targets is because it takes too long to go to the toilet. How many times are they going? If they get 2 tea breaks and a lunch break thats at least 3 pisses and maybe a dump at lunch. So how often are they needing to go to the toilet between those break periods that its affecting their work? Or maybe its just bollocks.

Amazon is a massive company, they obviously have very high standards for their staff. Having spent over 10 years in warehouses I can tell you that is a refreshing approach I've rarely seen.

Nobody said they weren't allowed to go to the toilet. They said it takes too long to walk there. The issue was with their targets.

The article mentions being disciplined over 'idle time' which would cover people standing around socialising. That doesn't mean it doesn't go on without being noticed. Maybe its harsh to many people but thats what working in places like warehouses and factories are like. Especially busy ones. You can chat and have a laugh on your breaks.

The looks of utter horror I used to get when I told new staff they weren't allowed to take their phones into the warehouse. You want to talk about slavery, there it is right there.

probably why they drove gas prices so high, they put over half the trucking companies out of business. then they can start up new union free trucking companies
