So...the crappy weather we are all experiencing comes with consequences beyond crops and other industries. I'm expecting lot's of dead fish when the ice comes off the lakes.

Many Midwest lakes are weedy and the weeds slowly die through winter months from lack of light reaching them. As the vegetation dies it also uses up oxygen as it decays. Meanwhile there is no fresh oxygen infusing into the water while the lake is ice covered and and no vegetation is alive to synthesize sunlight.

So the fish suffocate. The smaller, shallower lakes will be more subject to this. Don't be surprised if ice out reveals huge numbers of dead fish. Weeks away from the fishing opener and the lakes still have feet of ice.

Also expecting the Whitetail Deer herd to suffer significant loss in places due to lack of feed. I was seeing deer in a starvation state all over western Mt a month ago. Ribs and bones showing. There is finally some bare ground on valley floors but not likely to green up in time to save the worst of them.
