I need cat help/newborn kittens with their mom.
red_heart I need to move a cat mom from where she gave birth to 2 babies yesterday 4/24/18. She is a stray that showed up at my daughters boyfriends house and gave birth in their garage. I am willing to move them to my house. I need some advice.
On the other hand, I have different fingers.

Wait about a week at least, then make sure the kittens are not separated from the cat during the move or she will freak out.

mama may not like that

if they HAVE to be moved don't be surprised if mama doesn't stick around

then you'll be doing the bottle feeding and helping them pee/poop thing for 6 weeks

Give them some time to get strong before you move them. The moms can be picky and will reject the kittens for apparently no reason and its hard to care for young kittens.

Problem with waiting to move them is that the MOM will
often move the kittens if she perceives the place she's
given birth isn't safe--then you'll risk losing track of
where she's hiding them.

You'll want to be sure you have thick leather gloves that
go as far up the elbow as possible, have a 2nd person
with a cat carrier that is secure to help--also with gloves.
The mum will NOT think you are doing her a favor...so just
assume she'll be angry. Strays can be very combative so
be careful. If you put at least one kitten in with the
mom in the carrier with her immediately, she'll probably
settle down. If she is very combative, don't put kittens
in the carrier with her--move them separately.

I'd put her in a dark place that is contained somewhere
in your house away from other animals and children. Assume
she will need time to get used to her surroundings. So
don't rush things if you plan to add her to your family.

If your "home care" doesn't work out like the sweet
experience you imagine, your local pet shelter will often
have people who foster moms and kittens experienced with
the routine--you could choose a kitten from the liter for
your pet after the foster weeks are passed--usually 8 to
10 weeks.

I've fostered animals as well as worked at a pet rescue as a
vet tech...so I'm familiar with this. You are kind to wish
to help her but be sure to protect your own health, too.
Remember the GLOVES...critical for both your safety and
the cat's.

This is alittle gross...but if the Mom gets too upset
she may eat her kittens. (It's a survival mechanism so
the baby animals don't suffer--a different standard than
humans, of course.) So...plan this carefully. Maybe they
could just stay where they are.

Good luck!

Re: I need cat help/newborn kittens with their mom.
While they are in the garage, waiting to be moved, give them a t-shirt or a towel. Then right before you move them, have that piece of fabric waiting at their new destination.

When they get there, they will recognize the scent as soon as they get near it and it will make them feel comfortable, and they will know that this is there new spot.

The trick is to have it in place before you get there.

Also, if you can, put them in some kind of container (lined with the fabric). When you move them, you can lift the container with them all together. It makes it easier on all of them.

Before you do that. Get them used to being picked up. Pick up the container and coo and rock it gently, then put it back down. Make them like the container that they will be moved in.

If you can have recognizable bowls waiting at their new destination, that is good too.

You or your 16 year old should visit them as much as possible and spend time with them so mom gets to know and trust you.

Why do they have to be moved right now? It can't wait a few weeks?

If for some bizarre reason they actually do have to be moved, carefully move them all together and keep them in a comfortable closed off room so the mom can't get out. Make sure they have litter boxes and food ready for when they arrive. Plus have a box she can hide in with them.

Have hand warmers for the kittens just in case. Put them under a blanket.

Why not just leave them in the garage? I'm sure the mother cat knows what she's doing.

Re: I need cat help/newborn kittens with their mom.
Both my youngest daughters were scretched up by a 'stray' they were trying to save from a dog.

Both had to get the full range of rabies shots, tetanus,
and a couple of other doses of stuff to keep them from being
infected from other things. One of them was also 16. She is now married and may be having complications from all those shots over childbirth, as she is now trying to have a family.
10 years later.

It cost $24,000.00 for treatment for both of them.
I cannot stand cats. Am allergic to them also. They spread
toxoplasmosis gandii and kill 2 million song birds in the
USA every year. They are an invasive species in this country.

Have the infestation of these cats picked up by the pros and clean the area really well with antibacterial, antifungal,
and antiviral agents. Don't let anyone you love near them.

Best advice I have.

Re: I need cat help/newborn kittens with their mom.
A tip when approaching cats, especially ones not used to humans, is to think about what you look like to them when approaching.

They don't like big feet with heavy shoes clomping towards them. It makes them nervous. So wear soft shoes and when approaching shuffle over gently. Especially good for mom cats watching over tiny kittens.

They will appreciate your thoughtfulness, and trust you more because of it.

Re: I need cat help/newborn kittens with their mom.
When It's Safe

As difficult as it may be, you'll need to avoid touching newborn kittens during their first week of life, the ASPCA reports. Since socializing kittens with humans is an important part of their early growth, carefully start to handle your new fluffy babies starting during their second week of life. Before you pick them up, make sure you allow mama cat to sniff your hand. Pet her head and show her affection, ensuring her that you are not a threat. If she purrs, licks your hand or otherwise welcomes your petting, gently pick up a kitten -- pick up only one at a time.
