Haven't checked in for a while, so please forgive me if you have already reported it. But has there been any sighting of Rusty now that things seem to have settled down a bit?

No, I'm afraid not. Someone local brought up the fact that even though he may have gotten away from the fire, he would have died from the continued exposure to the gases.

Hawaii Tracker Nightly Update - 11/14/2018

"Seismic activity in the last 24 have been below the observed norms since the pause in the eruption over three months ago. HVO has reported that middle East Rift Zone tiltmeters have shown little to no deformation in the last week at Pu’u O’o, and further to the east. The only tiltmeter active further to the east of Pu’u O’o is located at the 1961 Jonika flow, located between Pu’u O’o and Leilani Estates, about 7 miles NE of Pu’u O’o. Since the summit Deflation/inflation cycle at the end of October the rates of inflation at the Jonika station have diminished to being almost flat in the last week.

There are currently no signals via GPS, tilt, or seismic to suggest that the Kilauea eruption will resume in the near future..."

Interesting activity going on there. I remember seeing this article, but I have been so busy, I forgot to post it.

Article dated 11/15/18 states quakes there have decreased and here these quakes show up a few days later.

Volcano Watch

"Since early August 2018, minor seismic activity has returned to the upper elevations of Mauna Loa. A brief flurry of small earthquakes began beneath the summit and uppermost Southwest Rift Zone in mid-September, followed by a sequence of earthquakes beneath the volcano's upper west flank. Seismicity beneath these regions continued through mid-October but has since decreased. Importantly, HVO notes no significant geodetic changes at Mauna Loa associated with this seismic activity. Lō‘ihi, a submarine volcano south of Hawai‘i Island, and other earthquake source regions have also been seismically active."

New Proposal To Name Fissure 8 Submitted

"(BIVN) – The Hawaiʻi Board of Geographic Names meets today on Oʻahu, as a new proposal for the naming of Fissure 8 has been submitted to the board for consideration.

On October 19, an official application was submitted by Mahealani Kaiwikuamoʻokekuaokalani-Henry, recommending the name “Keahiluawalu O Pele”...

This is the second official application to the Hawaiʻi Board of Geographic Names concerning the naming of Fissure 8. The first came from Dale Smith of Nevada, proposing the name “Puʻu Leilani”.

The Hawaiʻi Board of Geographic Names does not plan to make any decision on the naming of Fissure 8..."

Governor Signs 5th Supplementary Emergency Proclamation For Eruption

"The state says the fifth supplementary proclamation “extends the authority to spend state funds as appropriated for quick and efficient action to protect the health, safety and welfare of Hawai‘i County residents.” The proclamation also provides “additional time for Puna Geothermal Venture to re-establish, or begin to re-establish, the regulatory framework under which it is required to operate..."

You reading my mind? Very convenient for them, state funds can be spent, etc. All I've read indicates lots of money changes hands and it's not to do with the health of those that live there.

We were on the same page a few months ago. I guess that hasn't changed even though we haven't chatted for a while.

Are there new regulations or something? The way it's worded makes it sounds like they need to change something.

If there isn't anything new, then PGV is be doing something else. Are they setting things differently? Didn't they get in trouble for pollution or something not to long ago?

Or maybe they are running experiments right now.

Plot map of all Hawaii EQs magnitude 0.0 and greater for the past 30 days. You can really see how the activity is spread all over the island. Main swarms continue at Kilauea and areas south where all the fissures are. Mauna Loa continues to be busy as well, with some of the most recent quakes at surface level.

As Of Today, Kilauea Eruption Could Be Considered Over

"HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK - However, scientists say it is important to note that the volcano could erupt in the near future and the associated hazards have not changed.

(BIVN) – Kīlauea Volcano is still not erupting. Wednesday, December 5, marks three months with no eruptive activity at the surface; September 4 was the last time active lava was observed along the lower East Rift Zone.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory noted the implication of that three-month milestone in a Tuesday update:

According to the Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program, volcanoes with no eruptive activity over a three-month period are no longer classified as having a “continuing” eruption. Based on this Global Volcanism Program criterion, the LERZ eruption could be considered to be over..."

In this week’s Volcano Watch, the weekly article written by U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists and affiliates, scientists examine what could be considered the end of the decades-long eruption.

One of the most frequently asked questions of USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) scientists over the last several months has been, “Is the eruption over?”

It’s no surprise that Hawaiʻi Island residents would like to see Kīlauea’s activity behind them, given its toll on lower Puna communities this summer. The lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) erupted a volume of 1 cubic kilometer of lava and destroyed over 700 structures. Two-thirds of the erupted lava flowed into the ocean through the vigorous channelized flow from fissure 8.

The question was first asked in early August 2018, when summit collapses stopped and the volume of LERZ fissure 8 lava diminished. But fissure 8 wasn’t quite done. During September 1-4, one more appearance of lava occurred inside the cone before draining away completely.

And now, December 5 marks the three-month (90-day) anniversary of no surface lava activity at Kīlauea. This is a milestone for this summer’s eruption. The Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program (GVP) classifies the end of continuous volcanic activity based on an absence of eruptive activity over a three-month period. With this GVP criterion and no signs of imminent unrest on Kīlauea, the LERZ eruption could be considered over.

However, magma is still being supplied to Kīlauea Volcano and geophysical datasets continue to show evidence for movement of molten rock through the magmatic system, including the refilling of the middle ERZ. Mayor Thanks Ormat, PGV Regains Access After Eruption

"(BIVN) – Hawaiʻi County Mayor Harry Kim thanked Puna Geothermal Venture executives for a six-figure donation, a short time before the company was granted permission to cut an access road over the inactive lava channel that isolated the company’s power plant during the summer eruption of Kīlauea Volcano.

In a November 26 letter to Mike Kaleikini, the Senior Director of Hawaiʻi Affairs for PGV’s parent company, Ormat, Mayor Kim expressed gratitude for the “generous donation of $150,000 to help the people affected by the Lower East Rift Zone eruption.”

“This wonderfully meaningful gesture will go a long way toward supporting the County’s efforts to mitigate the arduous ordeal suffered by so many of our neighbors in the Puna community,” Kim wrote in the letter that was only recently posted to the county website. “It is especially meaningful because your company, Puna Geothermal Venture suffered alongside everyone in the eruption zone.”..."

Not many quakes at all these days. I'm not sure if that is:

good - meaning things have settled down or

bad - meaning something is building

I just don't know what to think anymore. I keep checking this thread though. Maybe I just don't want to admit my initial feeling that this eruption was not done was wrong??

I'm still trying keep an eye on what's going on at PGV, not that we will see anything to satisfy the curiosity surrounding the goings on there.

I thought the good people of Hawaii paid the insurance premium so puna geothermal suffered no financial loss.
