Weekly Kilauea Volcano Update Shows Inflation Downrift Has Slowed

(BIVN) – Kilauea Volcano is not erupting, and scientists have noted in Tuesday’s weekly activity update that “the inflationary trend recorded by GPS stations downrift of Pu'u O'o' has slowed.”

While downrift inflation appears to be slowing, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says that deformation signals are still consistent with slow magmatic recharge within the middle East Rift Zone, and that “very slow inflationary tilt has been steady at the Pu'u O'o' cone tiltmeter.”

I don't really know either, but it doesn't sound good. Philip Ong had an update on Jan 10th. I'll try to listen to it tomorrow and see if he mentions it.

"No significant changes to Kilauea, which remains in a quiet state overall. There has been an interesting tiltmeter reading coming from the Kilauea Summit (SLC), which caught a small but pronounced inflation trend, followed by deflation trend, creating a 2 mircorad bump. The signal change took place over 4-5 days (Jan 15th - Jan 19th) before returning to levels seen before the event began. The event does not seem to have registered on other tiltmeters located on Kilauea. Steam and low emissions of volcanic gas remain present from the vents behind Ahuʻ Ailāʻau (Fissure 8), as well as other fissures locations from the 2018 eruption in Lower Puna. Low levels of H2S emissions are creating some stinky conditions at the Kilauea Summit, near Pu’u O’o, and the lower East Rift Zone..."

Hawaii Tracker Update - 1/23/2019

"EDIT (1/24/2018): Just checked the Kupono st sink-hole. It's on the edge of a previous cracked and sunken area that ran under Kupono st with the rift line. Now a small section has caved in. No significant gases or heat to speak of (image attached)

No significant changes to Kilauea in the last few days. Ground deformation at the Kilauea Summit has been more volatile in this last week than seen in previous weeks, however. Tiltmeters and GPS stations have show signs of second tilt bump (different than normal daytime bumps), and small amounts of possible inflation at the Summit, a change from more flat trends observed following the 2018 eruption. Tiltmeters further down the rift, between Pu’u O’o show some small changes as well (POO and JKA), time will tell if the these trend alterations will amount to anything. The changes are subtle, and currently do not indicate a resumption of activity. Steam and low levels of volcanic gas emissions remain common around the Kilauea caldera, Pu’u O’o, and the Lower East Rift Zone.

Seismic activity in the last few days has included normal activity at the Kilauea Summit and along the south flank faults, in addition to a small flurry of deep quakes south of Pahala. Overall seismic activity is normal based on observed trends in recent months. We will continue to monitor Kilauea and Mauna Loa for major changes..."

Hawaii Tracker Update - 1/25/2019

"An apparent Deflation/Inflation cycle is in mid-progress at the Kilauea Summit. Roughly a dozen DI cycles have been observed since the end of the eruption in the lower East Rift Zone, most times accompanied by some preceding summit inflation seen at the Summit. The DI cycle has resonated once again at East Rift Zone tiltmeters positioned near Pu’u O’o, as many previous DI cycles have been.

Rockfalls producing reddish/pink dust clouds have been observed at Pu’u O’o in the last few days, producing similar size and colored plumes to previous rockfalls seen sporadically over the last 6 months. Steam can be seen commonly at Pu’u O’o most mornings, the amount of steam seen visually depends heavily on recent rains, humidity, and the current dew point.

Philip Ong and myself just completed surveys of the volcanic vents and cracks of the 2018 eruption. Steam from cracks in Leilani Estates and Hwy 130 are consistent with overall trends observed in earlier surveys, with small amounts of changes to temperatures and locations of steam. We will be posting our followup report on steam temperatures around the site of the 2018 eruption in the coming days."

VIDEO: Puna Eruption Donations To Get Council Approval

"(BIVN) – The Hawai’i County Council is in the process of accepting $170,355 in monetary donations for eruption disaster relief.

Most of the money is coming from Puna Geothermal Venture ($150,000). The remainder comes from Tokyoto Oshimamachi ($18,274.22), Saishoin Temple ($2,000), and Sister City Mayor Inoue ($80.44). According to the council resolution accepting the money, the funds would be used to help offset costs incurred relating to the 2018 lava disaster in the lower Puna region.

According to Mayor Harry Kim, the Puna Geothermal Venture donation “had no strings to [the donation] except one. The owners of PGV came to all of us and just wanted to be assured that that money would be spent for the good of the people.”

“That’s $150,000. That’s a lot,” Mayor Kim said during a January 8 council committee meeting. “But that won’t even pay for one foot” of a reconstructed road..."

Steam Vent Temperatures of Recent Eruption, Followup Survey
(Joint Post with Philip Ong)

"We found that areas in Leilani Estates, stretching up-slope past Highway 130, have been consistent with previous observations, or have dropped noticeably. Only one area, venting through the top of a tumulus closer to the center of the rift-line, had temperatures consistent with our previous survey. However, the area surrounding the tumulus has cooled, suggesting that this location has consolidated heat output to one location.

The hottest area in Leilani Estates we located previously was ~500°F, located some distance behind Ahuʻailāʻau (Fissure 8), in an area which produced no steam. In our most recent survey of the same area showed temperatures are down to 350°F. In Leilani Estates, where large cracks and volcanic vents pervade the ground, the heaviest steam vents have not shifted or changed in temperatures significantly. As observed previously, the hottest areas we identified were not producing any noticeable amounts of steam, and that the heaviest steam vents are significantly cooler in comparison.

Ahuʻailāʻau, and the volcanic vents behind the spatter cone, have not cooled significantly overall. In some locations along the fissure line between Fissure 8, 24, and 9 the previous recorded hottest temperatures have consolidated towards the rift line in which magma intruded in the 2018 eruption, shifting primarily on the northern edge to the south. None of the areas surveyed around Leilani Estates have recorded temperatures indicating heat or steam spreading or growing significantly.

While on the survey in the vicinity of Ahuʻailāʻau we documented one area that had little steam with temperatures of 180°F. After recording the temperatures I stepped on the area and a baseball sized rock broke free, with temperatures immediately rose 40°F to 220°F. We came back a half hour later and temperatures had risen to 240°F. This is notable because hot areas can be contained by a thin surface, which can be released easily by a small crack. One rock moves and the localized temperature changes, in this case by 60°F. Although 60°F isn’t an overwhelming spike in temperature, stepping into such an area wearing slippers would not be a pleasant experience..."

No Tsunami After Earthquake Southwest Of Hawaii

"BIVN) – A Magnitude 4.6 earthquake, located nearly 50 Miles offshore of Hawaii to the south southwest, did not generate a tsunami, emergency officials say, although Island residents may have have experienced some shaking.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued the statement at 9:15 a.m.

The earthquake was recorded at 9:07 a.m.

“As in all earthquakes, be aware of the possibility of after shocks,” Hawaii County Civil Defense stared in a message. “If the earthquake was strongly felt in your area, precautionary checks should be made for any damages; especially to utility connection of gas, water, and electricity.”
