Butters User ID: 77184268 United States 02/16/2019 03:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I thought this might be interesting since 2 of the latest quakes have occurred farther out from the Island. VOLCANO WATCH: Offshore Hawaii Earthquakes Explained "STORY SUMMARY HAWAII ISLAND - Scientists say many of the earthquakes in Hawaiʻi that extend offshore are due to plate bending, or flexure. The events are also called "mantle earthquakes". (BIVN) – On February 7, a Magnitude 4.6 earthquake occurred roughly 50 miles offshore of Hawaii to the south southwest. The event did not generate a tsunami, emergency officials say, but was strong enough to be felt all over the Big Island. It was the strongest earthquake since the summer 2018 eruption of Kilauea Volcano. In this week’s Volcano Watch article written by U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists and affiliates, the cause of the offshore earthquakes is examined." Also, here is an update from Philip Ong. I haven't watched it yet, but he is at Volcano House & shows a pic out the window of the crater right away. Wouldn't you know, there's dust from a rock fall just then. Butters User ID: 77184268 United States 02/18/2019 03:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "Where we stand now - Our take The best model we have found for the 2018 eruption is the events in 1840, where there was a summit collapse and associated Lower East Rift Zone eruption occured with similar flux rates over the course of eruption. There are differences, but in terms of a historical reference this is best we have. Following the eruption in 1840 we saw a magnitude drop in shallow supply rates to Kilauea from depth, dropping from a very high shallow supply rate (0.2 – 0.26 km^3/yr) to a low supply afterwards (.02 - .058 km^3/yr), a factor of 3.5-13 times lower than before that eruption. If magma that comes from depth is a constant, then the magma supply following 1840 had to be stored outside of the shallow system, somewhere between the shallow system and where magma comes up from the depths of the earth. Only a fraction of magma into shallow system from depth occurred, but that was still enough magma for lava to return to the surface of Halema’uma’u and refill the lower half of the collapsed crater floor by 1844. Currently GPS stations show that the south flank faults of Kilauea have remained very mobile following the M6.9 in May, 2018. Tiltmeters showing inflation in the middle East Rift Zone following the end of the 2018 eruption may well be measuring a magmatic signal originating from deeper than tiltmeters previously were documented to detect in this area, though exactly how this domino effect happens is still not clear. The latest USGS-HVO reports have even changed slightly to report that monitoring instruments are consistent with “refilling of the deep East Rift Zone”. This deeper type of storage inferred now helps explain how magma supply to the shallow system could be so dramatically cut following the 1840 eruption, as it gives the deeper magma somewhere else to go. The only concern at this time to us from Kilauea is the possibility for the south flank to move past some unknown threshold that could allow for more summit collapses, possibly that would involve the southern magma chamber, which is roughly 20 times the size of the shallow chamber which drained into the LERZ in the recent eruption. Continued summit collapse did not occur in 1840 to the best of our knowledge, but that could possibly have been the situation in the 1500 summit collapse which formed today’s larger caldera and also created some of the most prominent craters and volcanic cones in Lower Puna still visible today. Unfortunately we don’t know many of the fine details of the huge 1500 summit collapse, primarily whether it happened all at once or in a series of large (but smaller) collapses similar to 2018 separated by a short time that may not be preserved in the geologic record. However, it should be emphasized that there is no sign of any further collapse at this time even as the volcano continues to settle and adjust. Yet history leaves open that possibility as previously pointed out by Don Swanson following the 2018 eruption and summit collapse..." "(BIVN) – In the latest Volcano Watch article, scientists and affiliates of the U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory discuss the amount of time it takes for a lava flow to cool, and how the process occurs. The timely article is released amid an ongoing clamor on Hawaiʻi Island to regain access to Puna homes and properties that were lava-locked during the 2018 eruption of Kīlauea Volcano. In particular, residents are requesting the recovery of Highway 132, which was covered by deep lava flows from the Fissure 8 vent in Leilani Estates. Hawaiʻi County Mayor Harry Kim has held firm to a six-month moratorium on such projects, starting from the time the eruption ended. It has been reported that the recovery of Highway 132 is a top priority for the County administration. Officials are following the process as set forth by the federal government in order to get federal funding to recover the highway. The Volcano Watch article takes no position on the feasibility of recovering any road or highway in Puna.
