Black Streak Resembling Large Crack Appears In Kilauea Caldera

According to USGS Research Geologist Don Swanson,”What I have dubbed a “black streak” on the caldera wall is flowing water. The water comes from a shallow perched aquifer impounded by dikes in the southwest rift zone. Water flows southward along and in the sand flat below Crater Rim Drive but is stopped by the dikes, which form a dam. For one of several reasons (increasing water pressure, failure of wet sand, small rock fall), water breaks out of the aquifer and pours into the caldera. This phenomenon was first noted on July 4, 2018, and has been observed repeatedly since then. There are at least two different sites for such water flow, both just north of the southwest rift zone. The flowing water has eroded ravines or gullies that resemble cracks. Water flow generally lasts several hours and then stops as water in the aquifer is depleted. But, days to weeks later, water reappears.” "

USGS Publishes Updated 2018 Kilauea Eruption Timeline

"(BIVN) – A scientific, summary chronology and interesting facts has been published about last year’s lower East Rift Zone eruption and summit collapse at Kilauea Volcano.

On June 10, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory posted the new overview on its website. The two page document includes photographs, illustrations, and a written timeline of the dramatic and destructive events of last summer.

The Chronology reads:

April 30 Long-term Pu'u 'O'o eruptive vent collapses; magma begins moving downrift toward Puna

May 1 HVO issues notice of potential eruption on Kilauea’s lower East Rift Zone. Deflation of Kilauea’s summit begins and Halema'uma'u lava lake starts to drop

May 3 Onset of fissure eruptions on lower East Rift Zone; Volcano Alert Level raised to WARNING..."

There is basically nothing happening here.

It's an uptick in activity, including at 2 volcanoes, so that in itself is something to take note of. Whether or not it leads to anything I don't know, but it's something to watch.

Seaward creep...

USGS Explains Kīlauea South Flank Seaward Creep “At Elevated Rates”

"However, there is one new statement in the update. ” In addition to motion along the East Rift Zone, the south flank of Kīlauea continues to creep seaward at elevated rates following the May 4, 2018 M6.9 earthquake near Kalapana.”

USGS HVO Scientist-In-Charge Tina Neal mentioned the seaward creep in an interview with Sherry Bracken last week, but this was the first time the statement appeared in the weekly update.

According to Asta Miklius, a geophysicist at the observatory who works with ground deformation, the south flank of Kïlauea has indeed been moving faster since the eruptive events of late April last year.

Miklius said it is common to see elevated rates of motion on faults after a large earthquake, “however, post-seismic motions slow over time, and we have not yet observed the south flank motion slowing down.”..."

Heat and gases linger on Kilauea Volcano's lower East Rift Zone

"One year ago, activity on Kilauea Volcano was remarkably different than it is today. Lava was flowing toward the sea, robust ocean entry plumes were fumigating coastal areas, and island air quality was impacted by huge amounts of volcanic gases and particles. Homes and farms were lost, along with agricultural land and beloved landmarks. Animal rescue efforts were ongoing, with pets and livestock evacuated by land and air. At Kilauea's summit, daily explosions and collapse events rocked nearby residents, and a large portion of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park was closed to the public.

Now, for the first time in over three decades, Kilauea is not erupting. At the summit of the volcano, earthquake activity is low, and most of the National Park is open for business. No lava is flowing anywhere on Kilauea, and volcanic air pollution on the island is the lowest it's been since the early 1980s.

However, there are lingering issues in some areas near the 2018 eruptive fissures. Although lava is no longer erupting, residual heat and small amounts of gas continue to escape from ground cracks and vents as subsurface molten rock, perhaps only several hundred feet underground, continues to cool.

As small new cracks open in response to magma cooling, groundwater infiltrates areas of remaining heat, releasing steam (water vapor) and small amounts of other gases. Currently, areas adjacent to and uprift (west) of Highway 130 are particularly impacted by this residual heat and steam. These areas of elevated temperature may migrate, as cooling and groundwater movement continue.

In steaming areas near and uprift of the now inactive fissures, slightly elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2) gases have been detected. While these gases may be released from cooling magma, they are also generated by decaying organic matter, or, in the case of CO2, from burning or smoldering vegetation..."

Yeah last time i was down by fissure 8 couple months ago there were still plates over cracks in the road in a couple spots puking out gas.

One lot looked like gorrillas in the mistand you can still see what used to be houses, mostly rusty roof tin just crumpled and tossed aside. Kinda cool. Life in lava zone 1.
